320d M-Sport - loss of power
Help, hope someone can help or let me know if they've experienced anything similar. Basically I'm driving along the motorway doing about 80mph then all of a sudden it feels like there's a loss of power for a split second and then everything is back to normal again. I know a split second doesn't sound much but when traveling at speed you really notice it. I've done a search on the forum but havent been able to find anything. Is this normal or should I be taking it into the dealers?

Not personally experienced anything like this, but hopefully someone might be able to help you on here. If it does it again, I would probably take it to the dealers to be on the safe side.

Does the car have the particulate filter? I understand that it burns off the crud every now and then at the expense of a little power. Perhaps if you're in a really steady cruise you notice it.

Hi Mate,
I just had this same problem, was in South Germany on the beginning of a week long holiday and just 8 KM before I reached my hotel I had the same experience. In 6th at about 2500RPM I also experienced this sporadic loss of power and then back OK again feeling. This happened about 4-5 times and then the warning lamp lit up on the dash for motor storung (german name) - motor issues. I pulled over as the manual said to do so and waited for the service mobile to arrive it arrived and plugged into my car and then I was told that there was a problem with a regulator in the exhaust which measures the air to petrol mixture before passing the gases to the cat, this was sending incorrect values back to the motor and thus causing the engines fuel pump to incorrectly mix the ratio thus causing the issue. They ordered a new part arrived the 2 days later and was fitted that morning, I then drove to Italy and now back to Munich without any further problems. However with a less than 2 month old 335i this is not what you want to happen, for this reason I would take your car into your local service center as soon as possible and explain this to them and have them look at it before you need the motorway services X5 like I did and get given a 116 as a replacment Cheers, Des

I have an E91 320d and have experienced this twice now in just over 18 months of driving. It felt like a sudden momentary loss of power and then as soon as I noticed it, it went away and everything was back to normal - weird!

This happened on my wife's X-Type diesel estate. It took quite a few attempts for the garage to isolate and identify the cause. It was attributed to the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve being faulty. It was replaced under warranty and not happened since. Perhaps it could be the same problem Although with the X-Type it sometimes went into "Limp Home Mode".
All was well, until the turbo went (at only 45K miles). Fortunately Jag picked up the bill for the turbo and cat.....

Overpriced, unreliable, re-badged Ford piece of shit, that depreciates faster than a house in the flood-planes
I guess not Although the dealer network is good and they're always willing to relieve you of your hard-earned.

I'm not sure about the E90 diesel. However the E92 320d is different (N47 engine) and has a throttle valve after the intercooler. Purpose of it is to ensure EGR flow at higher turbo boost pressures. It does however create (amongst others..) this feeling of powerloss, but i noticed it only in transients where you come off the throttle, and floor it again. Under these circumstances either the ECU is too late opening the valve, or it has killed the turbo speed while the valve was closed. By the way the same valve causes the nice shutdown. Ever noticed how quickly the engine stops? The thing is easily visible when you pull the plastic engine cover off. At the end of the black pipe coming off the intercooler. The EGR piping goes partially thru the block. Sites like bmwfan.info and realoem show the detail.
This valve also assists regenerating the DPF filter when it does not regenerate itself. That happens when you drive too much in places where you should be using a bycicle.. and resulting exhaust gas temperatures are too low. The valve will then limit airflow so the engine can run 'extremely rich' for a while, and raises temperatures that way. There is back pressure warning light on the dash, but i don't know if that is a just-too-late light. |

Power Loss
Had my 320d Coupe for 3 weeks now and no problems till this morning. Yesterday I went to Belfast (from Dublin) and back in the day. The car ran perfectly well all day.
This morning I drove the car to work and all I can say is that it was like driving a Diesel. OK to 2,000 rpm then nothing, was still quite troquy but not the same car as yesterday. It seems like the turbo had been removed. |

This sounds similair to the problem I had on mine.
Turbo Actuator valve partially siezing on. Dealer said it was a common problem and replaced it. Runs fine since.

I think this is definately the EGR mate.
I have the exact symptom on mine, feels like a split second hesitation. Seems like the only solution is to blank the POS off (there are blanking things on eBay), get BMW to replace it (not cheap) or get them to turn the EGR down (i think someone on another board with a 120d got this done) Others have cleaned out the EGR valve but when i removed mine, it was minty clean. I am going to speak to my mapping chap to see if he can do it himself. Will keep you posted. EDIT: You can also disconnect the EGR without causing any errors etc by blocking off the vacuum pipe to it. i would rather it was programmed in though to be honest in case other sensors take parameters from it. I've had this problem with from brand new (May 07 e91 320d).
It happens round about 2000 rpm on mine whether the throttle is being mashed or I'm driving like Miss Daisy. First noticed it in France (1K one the clock) during a four hour stint on Autoroutes, warm weather, 90 ish on the speedo, flat road, steady accelerator - the damn thing just "coughed". Since then I get it at least 3 times a week, I can't be arsed to get it to the stealer as it hasn't failed just yet. Even passangers can feel it now - bet the stealer tech won't though! I've tried all available brands of diesel - currently use Shell V-Power and have for last 6 months, still happens all the time. I regularly run it up to red line when warm in lower gears to try clear any crap out. When it gives up I'll get it trailered to the stealer. |

Mine's just started doing this too... it seems to do it almost at the exact same point on my daily commute - always on the way home! I was getting paranoid that it might be caused by the Spider I fitted earlier in the year destroying the fuel pump - so kind of releived to hear that others have it too (i'm guessing not everyone on this post has a chipped motor?).
Do non-DPF cars (like mine) have EGR's though? |

Yes......without doubt.
My initial thought whilst reading the OP's post was the EGR system. Not aware of any ways of "tuning" the EGR system to make it work less. Blanking off/disabling the EGR system is not reccomended - as when the EGR operates, the Mass Air Flow sensor 'expects' to see a change in airflow - and if it doesn't, on will come the engine warning lamp.
