A background squeal

Driving my F30 320D M-Sport along the M4 yesterday I was aware of a background high pitched noise which commenced at about 55/60 mph.
I thought at first it was the radio on v.low volume. But the radio was off.
The squeal was intermittant and steadly got worse until, much to my embarrassment, my passengers eventually commented.
The sound was metallic, sounded like either a brake pad rubbing or a rotating part short of oil. But I don't know.
Kept the speed down to <55mph.
This AM phoned my BMW Main Dealer who said he would collect the car next Monday.
Strange thing is, today there is no squealing!
Took the speed briefly up to 80, no prob.
Anybody any ideas what the squealing could have been?
Not sure whether to cancel the main dealers collection.
PS The cars done <1000 miles.

Garage List
Possible that a small stone got stuck against a moving part somewhere? I had this on a previous car, a really loud metallic squeal - stopped, checked, couldn't see anything, carried on and it only stopped when I reached my destination and had to reverse into a parking space.

I would still get the dealer to check it out - better safe than sorry.

Yeah, i'd let them look at it. Its brand new and shouldnt be making any sound. Sod's law is you may cancel it, and the sound will come back tomorrow.

Rob's right, probably a stone that got trapped against a brake disc.

I had this happen on my E46 a month ago while it was up for sale, and the screeching metallic noise was so horrendous I thought it was something terminal for a few seconds. Then I realised what it must be (not the first time I've had it happen) and deliberately drove over some lump bumpy bits in the road (not difficult around here) which shook it loose.

Many thanks Guys for your comments!
The car was running perfectly yesterday with no squealing, thats two days running, but will have a word with the BMW Main Dealer today to see what they suggest.
Cheers!

There's been no squeal all week but this AM there was, which commenced at 30mph and got louder towards 40. I backed track home.
For various reasons have not yet seen the Main Dealer, but have an appointment tommorow.
Will let you know how I get on.

The Main Dealer has sorted the squeal!
It turned out to be a brake disc shield rubbing against a brake disc!
Oh well - it could have been something worse!

Glad it was nothing serious. Enjoy your squeal-free car again
