Can someone explain Pro Nav and all the extra's
e.g. Internet or the BMW live
But confused, as to why you need internet in the car? Same goes for Facebook and twitter But, am I missing anything cool like i think you can talk to your car with the iphone, or that standard with Pro Nav or do you need an extra option? Cheers

Don't know about the latest models, but in my '09 it consisted of a handfull of "apps" and google maps. Pretty limited really. Your iPhone will do a lot more. The BMW Assist is invaulable if you have the 5 digit postcode search, as you will be calling them up to find out where on earth you are supposed to be going, because the Nav is that poor. I've had a couple of occasions where you can select a destination with the internet bit i.e. a hotel or restaurant. Then you are supposed to be able to click the knob and the Nav will take you there. Fat chance. Not even close.
Didn't even download album covers on the iDrive. If Live/Assist is included, then OK, but I wouldn't pay the £100 or so per year to maintain it. And the SOS button is pretty pointless. The salesman will say that BMW will contact you if you have a big smash, and be able to tell where you are. Not in my experience. When I did my E91, I pressed the button, and was transferred to the Emergency Services. Fair enough, but of course as far as they were concerned, it was a transferred call, so were unable to pinpoint my position, and I could only tell them vaguely where I was. By all means, go for the Pro Nav with the big screen iDrive, and the pretty pictures (why can't they have automatic "night mode" like my £60 Garmin, rather than having to select it manually??), but it will be mainly for show and resale value Mike |

2009 e92 330d with professional nav etc.
You do get a decent 3d view but only in towns. iPhone easily does this and more. Internet searches slow and clunky. All the other bmw assist stuff, don't see the point myself. It makes a call to someone somewhere from your mobile to ask them something. I tried it once and hung up as I thought this is bloody embarrassing. Was going to spec it (on my next car) to get the bigger display and the integrated iPhone features, which you can do on the f30 with advanced Bluetooth. There's no BT music on mine just telephone. It's years behind Tom Tom etc and to get maps updated costs £400 circa. Looks nice doesn't do much. Bit like Andy Murrays girlfriend. |

Have to agree, its all pretty poor for the price.
I have the map on at the side Just so I can see what is up ahead in terms of junctions etc. But I use my Galaxy S2 for everything else - Sat Nav & speed cameras

you can also import driving routes from bmw and send destinations from computer to car.
Internet, bmw online and bmw assist are useful when driving abroad to get local weather, businesses etc. Had to ring in france and get details of nearest go karting track and tyre repair place. Traffic info and dynamic route guidance and more. Not perfect but I love it. |

Don't get me wrong peeps, I have really valued my pro Nav for e last 4 years! But it also gave a lot of extra features like idrive/mp3 .
Now F30s have idrive standard, I am a bit bemused after adding pro Nav, there's are still extra options! Quote:

BMW will rip you off for sat nav updates unless you do it yourself. You require 2 things. A sat nav DVD (£20 from BMW) and a FSC code (£50). You will then have updated maps and 7 digit postcode entry!

It doesn't use your phone, never has done, it uses the cars built in GSM phone unit for all assist calls and internet services. I use the assist loads, just 1 button to speak to someone and they'll search, find and send the location you're after. Much better IMO than fiddling with a load of buttons, hoping you can find the destination (BMW or Tom Tom) and nearly crashing. The lastest BMW Maps are £170 retail, or £50-70 if you search online. (Ford S Max maps are £400) My Tom Tom maps are £79 a year FFS! Other than Tom Tom HD Live with its fast updated traffic, the BM nav way better, quicker, smoother, better display, better directions, brilliant split screen map/arrow, than any shit clunky stick on nav. Again, had Tom Tom / Garmin / A2b / Navman and the 'auto night mode' is always garbage. BMW could have (and now do) offer it, but you'll still need the manual button.... |
