Hi

I have removed my back number plate so I could put my shortened personal plate on.

The original was held on with 2 screws but I've fixed my private plate on with double sided tape.

Problem is when it's warm the glue melts and the number plate falls off so I'm going to hold it on with screws.

Problem is I've binned the original plate so cannot use that to mark the private plate on where I should drill the fixing holes.

Anyone got a template or an old plate or an idea how I can solve my problem ?

Is it not possible to measure the centres and transfer this to the plate? If you're unsure, you could always make it out of a cardboard template first

Yeah I could but that's my last resort if I'm honest.

Chances are the plate would be slightly off centre, squint or the wrong height.

An old plate from another car or a template would be ideal.

or buy better tape. 3M tape or no more nails tape from B&Q - the red stuff sticks well.

I used the no more nails tape on my plates and lasted about 3 days before it fell off. You can buy rolls of proper number plate tape on ebay for about £2.

I used the whole roll to do both plates. (all the way around)

4 proper double sided number plate pads is all you need, they will stick for ever IF you have both surfaces clean. Give the mounting area on the car a clean with something like Autoglym Tar Remover to remove all the dirt and grime built up behind the old plate.

When I put plates on that way its usually a big job to pull them off when changing so can't see any adhesion issues.

This one's easy.

run a soapy cloth over the back of the car so it's slick, and then: stick a big blob of blue tac on each hole (loosely) and then press the plate onto it. Remove it again. You'll have bluetack on the plate exactly where the holes need to be.

(NB. Don't push it in too much and make suor else you have a new problem, picking blu tack from screw holes on the boot lid )

Could you not otherwise simply measure the gap between holes with a tape measure and apply the same to the back of the plate also..

Garage List
What are you going to do with the holes left in your front bumper?

I am in the same situation, I have a smaller private plate.
The rear is fine as the holes are central but the smaller plate doesn't cover the holes in the front bumper as they are right at the ends.

Why BMW drilled holes in the bumper is beyond me!!!

That would be good but it doesn't solve his problem of being able to get the plate straight and centralised.

don't eat fish and chips before using it....mine have stayed stuck, back and front. But thinking about it, I don't use a pressure washer around there so that may loosen things if you do.

Double sided tape all you need,
Just clean both plate and boot properly before sticking

Anyone got an old plate they could send me? I'd pay postage.

Can't you pop down the local dealer and ask for a old plate or template?

or even ask your dealer for some double sided tape? I've done that with my dealer and you need some serious effort to rip the plates off with there tape!

Think that's exactly what I'll do

Do you know that the original plate holes are central?
Did they use a template first time round?
Many don't.
