whats it worth to take away ?

I'm still waiting to hear the inevitable but it sounds like the gearbox on my 335d is kaput

So I am in the situation where, do I spend £2k I haven't got on a recon gearbox for my 90k miler or do I just offer it up for best offer.

Whats it worth as a take it away ? As that's all i'm interested in hearing from you guys out there

It's a space grey 56 plate SE , 90k miles but has a very nice spec

Nav ,xenon, black heated leather , sunroof , mainbeam assist , uncrack'd but not mint 230 19's with brand new contis (100 miles)! on the front. Factory Piano black inserts , auto lights, auto wipers , folding and dimming mirrors.

It's had all the right stuff done to the engine too. New red boost hose , vac pipes , pressure controllers the lot and as a consequence runs very well. That's cost me £1k already

I'm guessing that it's worth 12k running and would have to take into account the cost of the recon box..

As I do mega miles i'd probably fund a younger model

What do ya think ?

Buyers are going to look at this and see something needing BIG money spent

I think most will just walk away and any offers you do get are going to be crazy.

Find a way to fix and then sell rather than just give it away.

Unfortunately thats the problem , gone are the times when you could slap some thicker oil in the car to silence stuff up. A fix requires it to be fixed which is £2k +

I've can get hold of a s/h gearbox cheaper but because it's a different part number , who knows if it will work .. don't know who to ask either. I tried a post on this forum a few days back and got zip back.

there are people who do buy up cars like this , I had a friend who had his X5 box go the same way ..he sold it on to a garage although not sure what he got for it.

Hi mate,

Either way, I think you're going to lose out. I've sent you a suggestion as to what to do - It's not something I want to share on an open forum - as there might upset a few people. Don't worry, it's all above board - if a little controversial.

Sometimes you have to play the game that's in front of you - some people wouldn't think twice about selling a car like this and shitting on the next owner.

Vaheed.

Does that suggestion involve driving the car into something and claiming from insurance? Or taking out a warranty and claiming on it later on?

Or some other option I'd not yet considered for if mine goes

Good lad

Although your first suggestion is just scandalous.

If it's "above board" then why would it upset anyone?

Because there's 'above board' and then there's 'above board'.

Sorry, but I think things like Auto gearboxes should come with a lifetime guarantee. It's unfair for someone to folk out allot of money for something so expensive to go wrong before it's even reached 25-30% of the engines *potential* lifespan.

No need to apologise however I don't see why anything as inherently complex as an automatic gearbox should guaranteed for life, where do you draw the line?

What is a lifetime? Define against a perceived or benchmark "potential" life cycle. Driven gently, one floored every set of lights and dare I even say, one that has been "remapped".

There's three completely different life cycles. How long for each type of driving?

BMW have supplied 5 different gearboxes from 06 to '08 !

There must be some serious issues with them to get 5 iterations out in 2 years , unfortunately my box is version 1 so to speak so if anything was going to go wrong it's gonna be mine.

there are certain avenues to pursue and all is not quite dead , basically I was just looking for a bit of input on the value of the car as is.
I do quite high miles and am in the need of a car almost daily.
I have considered loitering around a very dangerous roundabout where people do not take heed of road markings and at the last minute swerve into a lane that if there was someone in that lane would not take avoiding action.

lol you can't do that, that's so wrong on so many levels

I know it must be a thorny issue but 56plate at 90k, as you say around 12k. I think if you get any offers of around 10k on eBay you would be incredibly luckily.

It's the uncertainty of how much is needed to fix it that will drive the price down and whats forcing you question selling it and cutting your losses.

Feel much the same.

You need to factor in the cost of change, however painful it is, as it could be more expensive to change the car than fix it.

I know you must be feeling you would be throwing good money after bad, but if everything else is OK, don't just walk away and then spend more money than a fix.

You might find a garage that can help you out. My wife had a new car arriving so i prepped her-then Mini Cooper for sale. Just as I put the ad in the paper the gearbox started making an awful noise. I took it to an indy who said the layshaft bearing was gone and it was a common fault, about £500 to put right. He agreed with my undamaged valuation of £3000 which I advertised it at so it was now worth £2,500 if I could find a buyer who would take on a damaged car. The indy offered me £2000 saying it would cost him about £38 in parts for the bearing and labour was just when he could be arsed to look at it or the lift was empty. He'd then punt it out for £3000 which he duly did.

It's a different scale from a 335d but you never know.

Would personally spend the money to fix the problem and keep it for a couple more years. But if you are thinking of selling it let me know and i'll buy it off you if the price is right. PM me if easier...
