A lot of X5 with the 20" wheels have had plastic film stone guard fitted due to side sills and rear arches being destroyed by stones. All carried out FOC by BMW, mine has it and its an excellent solution.

No I didn't pay but the job was over £1000. Involved repainting and perhaps even replacing the side sills and rear arches, also painting part of the rear doors to remove chips. Then covering all with the plastic film.

On the E70 X5 with the 20" wheels it was clearly a design issue as the sides became peppered with gravel from the roads. I complained about mine and was one of the first to get the job completed under warranty FOC. That was well over a year ago and while there are a few tiny marks now on the plastic it really has been a great job. The issue has been discussed in specific X5 forums and quite a few people have got the job done.

Assume this is on your E92 Acer? Is there already damage or are you trying to avoid damage occuring. If already damaged you should try a warranty claim although could be an uphill struggle.

I'm looking into this, is that mobile fitted?
Also wondering if there's much of a quality difference between different brands of protection film

theres no chips yet but am keen to keep it that way jsut not sure how effective the film would be at preventing damage from large or sharp stones and wether there is the possibilty damp could get under the film.

Can't see any chance of damp getting under it, as I say stones can still very occasionally cause minor damage but without the film it would be much worse.

I had my car done at PaintShield, the film was applied on the Alpina neary three years and still looking good! do a search on the e90 forum!

The film they apply is excellent, I wax it about once a month to help and protect it from bird poo and acid rain.

Having never seen it in person, is this film completely invisible once applied? Or does it change the paint finish slightly? I've seen people advertising film application for the first 1/2 of the bonnet, surely that would look odd?

I had the full wings sill and bonnet covered, the PaintShield film does not alter the colour. I also did not want a line right across the bonnet or on my front wings.

No it isn't invisible and if you have lines they can be quite noticable depending on car colour. However stone chips are more unsightly in my opinion so its worth it.

thanks for that. I was a bit dumbfounded by some companies trying to sell me on only covering half a panel, I'm hoping if i get full bonnet, wings, mirrors & bumper it should be fairly invisible.

I'm also wondering since a lot of the films apparently come cut to fit, if they can cover aftermarket bumpers etc.
