18's 19's or both? Advice, Opinions
So I'm getting new wheels and have noticed, as with all cars, that if you get a matching set of wheels the rear wheels, looking from the side, always appear to be a bit smaller. It's an optical illusion because the wheel openings are different sizes because the front wheel openings have to accommodate a turning wheel. So, do any of you have 18's in the front and 19's in the back? Any issues that I need to consider? I don't think it should matter, but can anyone confirm? I have TPMS. If I get a matching set, I'm leaning towards 18's because of the stiffer ride the 19's will provide. Plus I'm getting black wheels so they are less likely to be a noticeable difference in appearance between those two sizes. Any other suggestions appreciated. White 335i.

A bit confused on what you are trying to say, but are you talking about having a staggered set up?

Rather use spacers to improve the wheel track and stance - I don't think it would be wise to use different diameter wheels front to rear. Cosmetically it might look good for you, but the handling balance and feel will most likely be a bit strange. Now the other issue is getting rims of these different sizes in the same style, otherwise that is going to look odd of course.

e90s are not corvettes or muscle cars...
I know some import guys run a 18 F , 19 R or something off or funky like that... but in all honestly looks stupid to me. I saw a toyota supra in person a few months ago, what was the first thing i noticed? rear wheels were HUGE 20" or so, and atleast 10" wide I bet.. the fronts? well they look liked dounts.. 17s/18s and small small tire, just looked ridiculous... I dont care if our cars are RWD or not. Just get 19s all around, any type of "gain" (weight, more tire or whatever) with running a small wheel up front will be pointless. You wont be able to tell, and your car will look "off" get 19s all 4 corners.

Don't do it, it won't look balanced.
My cousin has a GT500 with a 19/20 setup and he has the front lower than the rear. It looks good on a muscle car, but I don't think that's the look you want on a 335i. |

...or a Corvette. I decided on 18's for a little more side wall on the tires.

Great idea, but you aren't taking it far enough -- what you want is a BMW Funny Car!
Do real skinny 14's in the front and big hog 20's in the rear. You'll have to swap front brakes with a Kia or something similar, but hey -- it's gonna be worth it for the looks, man. Then you need to man up on the body kit, too -- humungus wing first off, then some pavement-scraper fiberglass all the way around, especially in the front (you don't to want somebody's cat to get caught under the car when you go zooming down the road). Once you get that done, don't wimp out and just have a "looker" -- get a JB4 and have them write you a custom program for 5-600 HP, depending on how daring you feel, and then spend whatever you have left of your money on beefing up the motor to take it for at least a couple of months. THEN you'd have something you could REALLY call your own! |

The M3 has a taller diameter tire in the rear than the front. I'm surprised I haven't seen any 19" front 20" rear setups yet.

I'd think it would mess with the DTC traction control. Front and rear speed sensors going 2 different speeds. unless you accurately match tire roll diameter.

Me neither. Im still in it with my del sol. Ive never seen staggered diameters. Must be something new i guess. Muscle cars do it all the time and it looks good

Thanks all for the input. I was thinking that if I did do 19's in the back and 18's in the front I would keep the overall diameter the diameter the same. However, the consensus seems to be to keep the same diameter all the way around, which I have decided to do. I will probably go with 18's since I can get a less "stiff" ride with a higher sidewall. At 45, I have long since passed that era. But I will be looking into a JB4.
