After all the internet stories about bmw car theft.....

My insurance policy is up for renewal 1st of next month and after all the publicity of thefts of BMW I was getting worried.

I had read about 5-6 thefts all of which were given maximum exposure and made it across various forums.

My insurance quotes are now £400 which is about £120 less than last year.

My current insurer LV and Esure are top of the charts.

So is this just another case of the internet blowing everything out of proportion?

Apart from my first few years driving gaining NCB, I don't think I have ever had a 23% reduction year on year.

Obviously the insurance companies are not as worried as some people make you believe you should be.

My insurance went down when I bought the E92.

I previously had e87 116i.....

I think it's the usual - people only post horror stories online, nobody posts to say they've had trouble free motoring and their car still hasn't been stolen.

Not aimed at anyone specifically but posting photos of your car online and 'build' threads about all the mods probably don't help either if you don't want it stolen.

Most people don't include any registration plates or specific area details.

Of the expensive cars stolen, many are stolen to order and you would probably find a modified car is less desirable as it is far less likely to go unnoticed.

If it is stripped for parts it is more likely to be spotted too.

I'd say it's only going to really affect London & Birmingham where these thefts are rife.

I started posting my reg plate and pictures of my car in easily recognisable surroundings. Got up one morning and it was gone. By lunchtime it was back outside my house with a note on the dash saying it rattled too much and sorry for the incovenience.

Having got home today I found my renewal had actually come through today. I was with Admiral and they wanted 50% more than last year!!

Anyway quickly went onto the website that causes a lot of confusion and got some quotes. Privelage were the cheapest but still a 10% hike on last year which is OK I guess as it could have been worse but it's still gone up, joys of living in London

Sorry but most of the photos I see on here would probably give a decent idea to someone who lived locally where the car was. Not mebe from a sinle post, bt is probably not too hard to ge enough info from a few innocent forum questions.

I saw this happen on a Honda civic forum when I had my civic type r. Guy who posted most etc etc pics, mods an so on had it nicked. Could be complete coincidence but I doubt it.

So many people post in this forum but obviously don't read other threads.

There is one going currently where a policeman/forum member revealed a hint of the full extent of the problem. Suffice to say its not a forum myth, it's probably bigger than we think if anything.

Also I live in brum and my renewal halved, but my local police have confirmed 30-40 BMWs a month have been taken in Bham for the last few months which is unlike anything they have ever seenā€¦

I did read the thread but nothing was concrete in evidence or figures.

If there was a massive risk in your car going missing, why are premiums slumping?

That doesn't make sense.

That figure is only relevant compared with th total and compared with the trend of bmw ownership. What is 30 - 40 as a % of bmw's in bham this year and the last few years? - exactly.

For me It's not worth worrying about. Obviously don't leave it in particularly dodgy areas, but otherwise if someone wants to steal it, they will. Accept that it's higher risk than your neighbours mondeo and get on with it. Also it should be obvious that it might cost more to insure than said mondeo...

If a car is desirable to you then it also is likely to be to someone else. That won't change.

Just get on with enjoying the car. That's why we pay for insurance anyway - if it does happen you'll not be out of pocket much. If you are running it on a shoestring and worrying about every little thing going wrong ad costing you money, you'll never enjoy the car.

My insurance is due next month so I'm curious how much mine will be. Just ran a quote online with Direct Line, who I'm with:

£271.36

In fact just being nosey, just put in a few more cars into Direct Line. Some bizarre results. All are for a 2011 car:

335d £275.60
335i £262.88
M3 £313.76 (required tracker to be fitted)

All with £350 Excess with legal but not protected no claims.

I'm surprised a 335i is cheaper to insure than my car. And an M3 is only 40 quid more.

When i was looking at buying my E92 i looked at insurance for 330d, 330i & 335i and the 335i was cheapest for some reason?!

Why? I know people who had it in the past, made a claim, then their policy goes up anyway. Seems a rip off to me.

My premium was £491 last year, renewal came through at £419 - I then realised I hadn't updated my address after moving a few months ago - updated with new postcode £349 - result!
