thinking of trading in my guided missile later this year, to avoid major servicing and tax costs in early `13. seriously thought diesel as v-power up here is dearer than diesel, and with less mpg on the 335i than a 330/335d.
i only managed 4k miles this year, so am thinking of staying petrol, especially as i find these engines so addictive, particularly the low end ooomph.sooo, anyone any experience with the new engines with the scroll turbos? do they have the inherent probs of the n54, or have they been exorcised? any mpg improvements?am very tempted with the 335d, but based on what i read here, they also seem to suffer with quite a few issues, don`t know about the 330 though. would be very grateful if anyone has said scroll version, to know running costs, especdially against the venerable n54. thanks a heap chaps. one other thing, are the power and torque delivered at the same low revs as per n54?

I'm interested in knowing what running costs your anticipating? My 335i is now nearly 5 years old (build date 10/07) and in the last 12 months I've spent £300 on a oil change/spark plugs/air filter for maintenance and thats it!

Surely if your only doing 4K a year your running costs must be minimal?

The N54 engine has also just won another international engine award for the 2.5-3.0L class!! Thats 3 awards for the same engine over 5 years (2007, 2008, and now 2012). The N55 won in 2011. So technically both the N54 and N55 are very good!!

If you pop over the the engine tuning section of the forum your see the guys over the pond have a constant debated about which engine is better, certainly some people feel the N54 engine is actually better than the N55 unit, espically if your going down the tuning route

N54 vs N55 debate is only relevant if you plan on modding the car. Twin turbos yield more power than the single.

Stock for stock the N55 is the choice due to fewer problems and more fuel economy..

I'm becoming a little too interested in swapping mine for an M135i!!! These average 37mpg which is pretty bearable.

Swapping the car to avoid road tax and servicing costs sounds like a bit of a false ecomony to me. Surely the cost to change will be more than what you will pay out for the above??

If you're buying nearly new why are you worrying about 'issues'. You'll get warranty for 3 years and can then extend it at reasonable cost

Let me get this straight...

You do 4k miles a year, yet are worried about fuel consumption and you don't want to pay an extra £200 on road tax a year, so you want to buy a £25,000 car? Not to mention that servicing on a car that only does 4k miles a year will be once every 2 years at about £170.

Have you even thought about this for more than 5 seconds?

Oh and according to my calculations running a 25mpg 335i over a 35mpg 335d over 4k miles costs just under £12 a month more. Great saving there...

er, thanks fellas, i think! you`re right of course about the miles, but they are about to increase very dramatically(12k +) and my car is now over 5 years old. my local dealer has admitted a numder of hpfp issues, as i recently looked over a year old 335i and a very tasty looking Z4 35is. they told me a 335d was now factory order only, dunno maybe ,but i`m sticking to petrol i think.like you pionted out there`s alwyas the warranty, but hasslw free motoring would be nice. C350 cdi anyone? just kidding. thanks guys.

Looking at the UK Technical forum, 335d's have the same if not more problems that the 335i.

Both should be run with a warranty to ensure no nasty bills.

No chance that is the case mate. There is no known problems with 335d Injectors, fuel pumps, coils Hahaha, or turbos.
