How would 225/40/18 compare against 225/45/17 in snow?
Thinking of getting 225/40/18 tires all around on a 07 328xi, and since the 225/45/17 stock tires have the same 225 width(footprint), I am thinking there would be no noticeable difference in snow, given both sets are all-season.
so would 225/40/18's do slightly worse - hardly noticable much worse - get out the 17" about the same As long as there are not much worse, I may be able to avoid the winter tire swap thing and even sell off stock 17" to defray cost of 18". Thanks!

As I understand it - no difference.

I have 225 40 18 RFT's all around and the car drove great in the snow. I sold my stock 16" before winter so I don't know if it drove better or worse. I was definitely surprise how well it handled.

Winter tires benefit from a higher profile on a smaller size rim as well as a narrower width (higher normal preassure due to weight disrtibuted over smaller area) 225/55 R16 or 205/60 R16 would probably be good dimensions for real winter driving on a mix of snow and ice. Check out winter ralley tire dimesions just for fun..

Thanks for your responses!
Can anyone else share their experiences with 225/40/18's in snow with x-drive?
