Gas Mileage only 10.2 MPG - 2007 e92
Hi, I got a 328xi coupe - 2007- and i am only getting 10.2 MPG mixed driving. The car has 250 miles on it. Any reason to be alarmed.

Dont be alarmed.
Your E90 has an onboard learning computer that will adjust to your driving habits. Remember, all the gauge gives you is an average, so it normally takes about 1200 miles to build enough data to give you an accurate reporting without fluctuating too much. You will see 18-21 mpg at that time.

The AC is not going to cause his fuel consumption to double. Using the AC has about the same effect or less on gas mileage as driving with the windows open.
Question to the OP: How many miles were on the odometer and what was the gas mileage indicated on the computer when you picked it up from the dealership? It may be that your car was driven with a lead foot before you even got to it.

dude if you're going to wear metal shoes, at least get some carbon fiber so it's light and doesn't mash on the gas for you

1) First fill the tank and reset both the MPG reading and the trip odometer. 2) Next drive a couple hundred miles or so. 3) Finally fill the tank again and measure your consumption both with the on board computer and the old fashioned way. I have the RWD model, with heavy stop and go traffic I get maybe 16 MPG. On the highway at 70 mph I get up to 32 MPG. In mixed driving, well, it depends on the mix! Usually it varies between 18.5 and 22.5. |

My SA told me that the engine won't get very good mileage until after the break in period- when it gets used to your style of driving.
I found this to be true, I got around what you're getting at first, but now I'm around 20. Just reset that gauge after refueling and keep an eye on it.

With over 10k miles i'm averaging around 21 MPG. Just drive it a bit more and it should go up.
Also, check your tire pressure. If it's too low it can cause poor gas mileage. I'm not saying that's the culprit but it could contribute to it as well. |

No way it should be so low at any time. Are you mashing it to the ground while "cruising" in 6th gear? Or just mashing it 100% all the time? I can get 11 mpg on a 335i, but that is only if I wring it out all the time on a series of on/off ramps.

take a look, he's from nyc. even if you mash the gas and race from stop light to stop light you'd have a hard time getting that low mileage. what it is is nonstop sitting in traffic. when it take 2 and a half hours to go 8 city blocks downtown, gas mileage is horrendous.
or you could look at it this way, if you drove a H1 you'd be doing alright. |

Well if the car has about 250miles on it chances are you just finished your first tank and your tank is 15.9gallons and at 10.2 mpg you would have only went 160miles so therefore the computer need to learn.

Ok, when i first picked up my car, i drove from santa barbara to san diego, about 240miles. Before i began my trip i had driven about 100....therefore, my car once i arrived home was around 350. I was still in 12-13mpg range from freeway driving and now i get almost 22mpg. Stop freaking him out, the car will be fine and get to "normal" mpg soon. I also see you have the xi, so you might get a little lower mpg than rwd....but don't worry.
