Which gearbox goes better with diesel engine?

I mean 2,5 liter or 3,0 liter engine. I've heard with automatic transmission you can use the engine's max torque and power more efficiently. With manual there may be some losses. What do you think? If there's been a post about it please write the link. Thank you.
