My Western Digital Passport 120GB drive does not work. It spins, and the light blinks, but the car says it's empty.

I also tried a 2GB microdrive with a USB adapter, and it gaveme an error. (CF cards work though).

Try it and let us know if it works.

Garage List
My Archos AV400 works fine --- just like a USB thumb drive -- similar menus

How is your drive formatted? If it's NTFS, that would definitely make it not work. Try formatting it FAT32 and see if it works. It would be awesome if these Passport drives would work!

+1 Yes, this is in the manual..... You need to format the media with PHAT, I mena FAT. Also I think the other issue is the 6FL port may not be 100% USB compliant and supply the necessary power.

Let us know if this works!

Just to let you guys know that power coming a USB won't be enough to spin any external drive that uses 3.5" HD. with 2.5" or 1.8", it should work.

In addition to power output limit, there could also be a limit on storage size. The Archos AV400 could've worked because it has a battery and is only 20GB.

To rule out the power output limit, you could try using a cigarette-lighter power invertor ($25) to power the external drive. (But some USB drives don't have seperate power supplies)

I'm using an External 40GB Firelite Bus-Powered USB drive formatted FAT32 with about 16GB of music on it so far, works fine, well kinda. First of all, the first time I connected it, it took over 30 MINUTES!! for the "Directory" category to finally became available. Then another 30 minutes for the other categories to become available (Artists, Album, Genre, etc). Once it completed the initial indexing, the "Directory" category becomes available fairly quickly (within a minute or 2), however the other categories still take about 5-10 minutes to become available.
