A deer ran into the side of my E90!
Ran right into the side of the car, in broad daylight!
Before I tell the story, I will summarize and say the small fawn appeared to be ok, and my car miraculously suffered only some very minor paint abrasions, not scratched down to the metal. I know nothing will completely remove the scuff marks, but what do you all suggest to at least try and minimize them? The car is jet black. Compound? "Scratch remover"? (or is that stuff a joke?). Should I attempt myself or just take to a body shop where they have more talent and equipment? Any ideas are appreciated. Anyway, if you are still reading and want to hear what happened, here is the long version......we had left Chicago for a few days and were driving thru the Indiana Dunes State Park when it happened. 4pm in the afternoon, on a 4 lane wide road, very rural, doing about 50 MPH, and a large deer ran in front of the car and across the road. I hit the brakes, but since he was a ways away and now almost completely across the road, I only slowed down to maybe about 30 MPH. As he crossed the road to our front right, I then looked back to the front left to see if there were any more, and saw another one standing on the left side of the road, maybe 100 yards ahead. I said to the fiancé; "there's another one", and JUST as I said it, something caught my eye immediately to my left. It was a small fawn, it's head just at my window height (barely), and he was coming straight at the car from the left side!. He was only a few feet away or closer when I first saw him, but since I was still moving forward and he was running perpendicular to the car, he ran right into the left rear door, and then kind of bounced along the back quarter panel. The fiancé said she saw his little face run right into the left rear door window, and the whole thing did make quite a racket. She started screaming and crying (total animal lover, on the local board of PAWS, yada yada). After a second, I could see the fawn in my rear view mirror behind the car, on his feet and moving, and then I turned around to see him run into the woods to the right (where the first deer had gone, probably it's mom). He appeared fine. The woman is practically hyperventilating now, so I am trying to console her and calm her down, and about 5 minutes later she finally says "do you think that damaged your car?" I was like "UH, I'm SURE!" I was glad at least the conversation was turning to my priorities . We drove back to our Indiana house (10 minutes away from where it happened), and I finally took a look. The car had dirt marks on the door, window and all the way back thru the quarter panel, but I couldn't tell if damaged underneath all that dirt. I washed the back left of the car, finding only 3 small scuffed areas. I can't believe my luck. Soon it was time to drink some cocktails, light fireworks, fire up the grill, and throw some logs in the fire pit, so I quickly forgot about it until this morning when we drove back to our condo in the city . Just thought I would share.

despite the crazy turn of events, consider yourself very lucky! it could have been MUCH worse than it really was. that almost happened to me a few years ago, but i gunned it right when i saw the deer, and the car behind me nailed it. not a pretty picture in the rear view mirror!
as far as your repairs go, i'd personally take it to a body shop and ask them what they think about it. i've tried a scratch remover before, and it just made it worse. maybe i did it wrong, but i don't really like messing around with my paint. hope you get it all taken care of!

Both you and the deer were very lucky, and hopefully the deer fared no worse than your car. Good thing you were slowing and looking.
I'd get a body shop or detailer to look it over. Is there a dent or deep scratch anywhere? If not, you might get away with a good professional detailing. Making an insurance claim is always an option, but I'm sure you'd rather avoid that headache if possible.

Oh deer! Not another one of these.
It would be nice to see some photos of your car's paint to get a better idea of the damage. Those deers sometimes look okay, but then they go off into some remote, obscure place to die. I hope he/she is okay glancing off your car. |

I would go back to that spot and hunt that little MF down and put a few rounds in his sorry little head. Did he not realize he was messing with a BMW? If you don't show them who's the boss, soon we will all be at the mercy of these filthy animals that think they can get away with vandalizing our BMW's.
....oh, it was a little fawn. Never mind.

I laughed so hard. Thank god the deer was OK, but what a dumb animal. My neighbors dog jumped on my Montego Blue coupe and gave it some paw prints right near the passenger door handle. I just used some scratch remover and elbow grease and it looks just fine, did the same thing with a shopping cart ding though and it does not. It seems like a real crapshoot what kind of results you get for each blemish on a car. My method is just try whats handiest and remember that shit happens, and its a good excuse to mod.

I just saw a thread on a forest forum where a deer was complaining "some jerk in a BMW just hit my baby and took off".
The nerve.
