A break-in question

I drove the first 2500km of my 335i E92 AT in two days, 95% on the motorways in Europe. The average speed was around 150km/h, but occasionally between 180km/h to 220km/h (sometimes clearly over the recommended 160km/h). I redlined the revs maybe 5 to 10 times.

I was told by the dealer that there is no break-in period and got worried after checking the manual after my trip. Should I expect any problems?

I tried but cannot conclude is my style of breaking it in good or bad. Thanks.

Don't believe every thing you read or much that a dealer will tell you. But IMHO, I think you are better off doing what you did than following the manual. Only time will tell. Most likely you will have another car before any long tern effect will show up. I doubt that your break in will contribute to any oil consumption issues. In fact, I believe you technique is less likely to have oil consumption than that described in the owners manual. But that is just my OPINION.

If you park in well lit areas that are patrolled on a regular basis by the police, I don't think you will have any problems with break-in.

Wouldn't engine break-in be more RPM-dependent rather than speed dependent?

Actually, it's more than both. You have your tires, clutch, and brake discs that you need to break-in.

Regardless, unless you take the car to the track initially, you shouldn't have any problems breaking-it-in around the city.

If the OP hasn't figured it out yet, there's nothing we like more on the forum than questions about proper break-in procedure!

Break-in is one of the biggest scams running. These engines are run at the factory, and built with some of the tightest machining tolerances of any production vehicle around. Chevy's from the sixties had to be broken in, now you are just flushing warrantied/free repair miles down the toilet.

It is a high-compression turbocharged engine, beat the hell out of it and ask why it didn't take it in the service driveway.

Seriously, if you're leasing your car, don't waste another minute pondering whether you broke it in right or wrong. If you bought it outright, have you started thinking what your next ride will be?

Realistically, what's done is done and there's no use crying over spilled milk. Just go out and enjoy your car.

First light, I took it to like 5,500rpm Some people in the car next to me wanted to hear her roar She had like 4 miles...

I took it fairly easy but was never afraid to drive it "spirited"... My gas mileage has only gotten better and the car feels great. I am averaging 19.1 in the city or about 320mi/tank (16.4gal fillups)
