That Apps cradle is a fantastic design.

After about 10 minutes of listening to web radio today my iphone shut down due to temperature. It usually gets awfully hot while in the cradle but this was the first time it had shut down. The phone felt like it had come out of an oven.

Really?! Ooh, haven't given that a thought...
I have a cradle for my 4S coming with my 328i and the full iDrive with BMW Apps 6NR and the full works, save DAB radio. Hmm, time will tell! At least the iPhone is intelligent enough to shut itself down before it melts itself....

Yeah why can't we just have a slot with a dock for the phone that keeps it upright and visible, like on clock-radios?

Just use Bluetooth audio, that works great for web radio and is the most convenient.

I do. I only plugged it in because the battery was dying. IMO BMW Apps is really almost worthless because you have to keep your phone locked away under the armrest.

its hot because the app stays open the whole time. If bmw could figure out a way to close the app while its still playing in the background then it wouldn't get so hot.

I think the cradle should be free. the benefits for me are the rapid charging and better reception an of course the interface .

question do you still get the nice interface on Idrive with only the cradle? ie: thumbs up and down on pandora?

I know right, £90 it's costing me extra!

Hang on, I didn't think there were any interface improvements with the Media Cradle? I thought it just gave better signal strength and faster charging, and that just plugging into the USB port also gives all of the other functions.

+1 - hope that's the case. I don't want to give up space for a cradle...

Do you get no charging whatsoever with a Y-cable?

I beleive the cradle does offer some interface improvements, but none of the info BMW has put out specifies what the differences are and I have yet to see a side by side comparison.

I think the cradle only gives you video out and connection to the antenna. Don't know about faster charging.
You can use the Apps with the Apples USB cable only (assuming you bought the right options)

The Y-cable should charge too via USB.

The space is already gone. When you lift the armrest there is a cover where the cradle suppose to be. When you get the cradle you remove the cover which is about the same size as the cradle and replace it with the cradle. no space is gained or lost.

For what it's worth, I have inherited a "basic" snap-in adapter from a colleague who decided he did not need it in his F30. I figured it will be as good a place as any to store my phone and, if it charges the phone and improves reception, all the better.

Meanwhile, I will be leaving an 80gb iPod in the car from which I will source all my music. Having failed to realise the importance of the various phone/media options, I have bought a Y cable for that.

Anyway, when my car finally arrives next week I will have the opportunity to test out these various options first-hand and will gladly report back what I find. I doubt there will be any nice surprises, but who knows!

I am very interested to find out first hand what alleged limitations the Y-cable has, if any....and if there is a poorer idrive interface for those who don't pay for the cradle, shame on BMW.

I plan on doing the same but I've heard of stories of people leaving iPods in their cars when the weather was freezing and it doesn't seem to be good for the battery - it was completely dead the next day and they had to plug it into the mains for ages for it to wake up. That was years ago tho so maybe the newer Classics are better but even so it might be worth taking it out of the car when temperatures are very high or very low. I doubt I'll remember though!

Cheers dude. My iPod is a 4th or 5th generation and has been living in the glovebox of my Audi for over two years without fail. It lives in a neat little slot which comes as part of the Audi Music Interface (which is great btw).

My old 20gb iPod died after 9 months in there though, it just couldn't hold a charge any longer. I guess the newer models are made of stronger stuff!

Does your cradle not have the cooling fan ?
The design was changed some time ago to add a cooling fan because of the heat issue that Apple did not foresee in the first Cradle design

Looking down at the cradle there are air holes in the middle with a small fan behind.

You can see the air holes here (round black bit with slats in the middle) on this picture from the net
Early ones did not have the fan
