They replaced the thermostat and never thought to replace the water pump on a 120,000 mile BMW?

If you stopped and let it cool down when you got the warning, most probably nothing permanent happened.

It could be the radiator or the fan to.

Try to find the root cause if you can.
Have you been doing radiator fluid changes and flushes on a timely basis.
I think Mike Miller recommended a total cooling system rebuild at around 100k.

OP, did the car go into limp mode when the light came on? You should not drive it any further until you get the water pump replaced. Have it towed to whatever shop you do business with.

And I have to ask: how did you put 120k miles on a 2007 vehicle? That's a lot of driving.

If they replaced the thermostat, lost some fluid and didn't bleed it properly upon refilling there could be air trapped in the system. It needs to be bled. But water pump would also be a more likely scenario at that mileage. Clearly you have done a ton of highway miles which means higher rpm for longer durations which naturally will wear the pump out.
