No Jack in a Z4??? Baffled...

So Ive ordered new wheels and tires for the M, anticipating their delivery either today or tomorrow. I want to be ready so I go out and look for my jack and lugwrench, usually found in ALL cars these days. To my surprise, the Z4/M has NEITHER!!! The manual states that those items are extra accessories...HA!!! The nickel and diming of the owner continues....

I went and priced floor jacks and decided thats too much money for something Im not going to use but maybe 2 or 3 times. Our SUV has one, but its so tall I cant use it on the M. Are we supposed to be too snooty to actually change our own wheels/tires these days??? I didnt get that memo...

Frustrated,

Chad

I never realized it in all the years Ive been driving a Z4.... I guess that only makes some sense seeing that there is no spare tire either.

Well.......with no spare they figure we don't really need a jack to tote around.

BTW the sears jack on sale is pretty good for pulling wheels at home. Be sure to get a couple of jack stands if you go with a floor jack.

There's no spare tire?

C'mon... realistically, now... how many times have you seen a BMW owner change their own flat? It's all about pushing the

BTW, before y'all think I'm some sorta princess, I change my tires for all my cars That way you know that it's torqued correctly.

Take this with a grain of salt if you like:-

My BMW sales manager and I spoke about runflats while I was waiting to collect Sabine. He was saying that statistically the average driver only gets a flat once in ten years. So why the heck carry around a spare and a jack for that?

I can't say that runflats or tyre goop are the best solutions, but I carried a jack and a spare tyre around in my last 2 cars for over 6 years and neither of them ever got used.

Makes sense in a way, on the other hand, statistically we probably get into accidents at that rate or even less but I still want to carry around airbags and seatbelts in my car Ive never liked this whole runflats/tire sealant solution. I know the few times i've gotten flats, i was so grateful I could go outside and just change out the tire in a few mins and continue on my way. Sure the runflats let you skip all that, but you never know, maybee you get some big puncture, or you hit a nasty pothole that shreds the wheel and you need a quick fix on the side of the road. And of course any enthusiast who actually throws the runflats in the garbage are at a disadvantage from the start.

Bring back the full spare!

While the statistics do run in my favor for bailing on my OEM run flats, I did at least pick up a small air compressor, a can of tire goop and a set of tools/plugs to repair a flat if necessary. I also have AAA Plus in addition to the BMW assistance.

But unlike those who scorn changing a tire, for the past 6 years I have been a hard core track junkie and keep a wide variety of tire/wheel sets around for my vehicles and regularly swap my wheels around depending on driving conditions. I have multiple floor jacks, a compressor, jack stands for everything I own and have changed out more brake pads than I can remember at this point. I would have installed a lift long ago if it weren't for the 9 foot ceiling in my garage.

To me the task of changing my wheels at trackside for a day of lapping is a 20 minute task at most with only hand tools and my only limitation at the moment is the fact that my last 2 cars have been too small to hold a set of wheels with track rubber for the lapping event.

The stats may be in my favor for the flat situation, but I really like knowing I have the option to swap the damaged wheel out and keep going.

I've had a tire on my old car blow on the highway. But that was my fault. I found it flat, pumped it up, and drove with it. Live and learn, baby!

Eh... Mark, but most people don't even regularly check the spare to make sure it's inflated.

Do you know how many times I've helped friends change their flats, only to find that the spare in the trunk is totally deflated?

Oh, and there was that real fun time that the lugs had been improperly torqued, and two of them snapped on us.
