$9456 adjusted refund coming to me, apparently
Although I find it difficult to believe, I did receive an official notice from the IRS that I am getting a check for $9456.
So... considering I already have the BMW Performance Suspension and the Stage 2 PPK, what else should I do to my base model 335i?

My rims are the base level 17"ers.
I do not have sport seats, I do not have a sport steering wheel, I do not have paddle shifters.

Just remember that the money you're getting back was always rightfully yours; the IRS simply stole it from you over the year and was good enough to return it.
Oh, and depending on why you're getting that refund, you might want to adjust your W-4 so less gets withheld this year.

I would get some good wheels and tires, then save the rest.

Withholding Calculator
That is a free loan you are giving the IRS then they make like 6% from your money. Last edited by Rhodes7586; 04-16-2012 at 02:16 PM.. Reason: I did a thing |

Frankly, I am not sure they owe me, and I'd rather not steal someone else's money. Still looking into it, but daring to dream.

It'd be close, but probably. You could at least upgrade the brake pads even if you didn't go full BBK, which would be pointless unless you track the car -- and $5-6K on a good BBK is a lot to spend on something that won't deliver you any benefits. However, better brake pads might be pointless on a non-track car as well unless you drive REALLY hard on the street (not recommended anyway).
As for everything else, yes you could easily get the parts for $10K. Labor would vary depending on shop and how much you want to do yourself/with friends, but even if you paid to have everything installed you might come in under $10K if you skip the brakes entirely.

I would save a good portion of it. If you feel like you "need" something for the car then treat yourself a bit but save a good portion of it. You dont want to look back in 3-5 years and be like damn I wish I never spent that money

Wow that's some ass backwards thinking. Why not just invest/save that money through the year and have it make you more money with interest? Again it's money that you earned which could be making you more money in the long run, instead of letting the Federal Goverment use it interest free.

Yes its letting the government hold some of my money but what is it like 40-50 extra that I dont feel out of my paycheck that is given back to me in 1 lump sum. That sounds pretty decent to me. I have money that I save regularly etc so its just another way to get a lump sum of cash at one time. I almost consider it a bonus. But like I said to each there own

Not to be the voice of reason or joykill in this case, but mistakes happen, and when we're talking about any govt agency, especially the IRS, then.......well you get the point. I would make 200% sure that money is yours and not some mistake before spending a penny of it. If this came as an absolute surprise to you, then even more reason not to spend it without confirmation. With all that said, if you do clear it up and you know for sure this won't come back to bite you in the future, I would still save it for your eventual M3. |

That's a $9,500 interest free loan you gave to the government. The best thing is for *you* to owe *them* on 4/15 or for you to have paid *exactly* what you owe. Tell your accountant to get his act together.
