Names instead of numbers with hands-free?
My contacts are synced to my 328i from my iPhone, and I can scroll though their names in the phone book via the iDrive system, but I'm having a problem.
Whenever I receive a call, the iDrive screen shows that there's an incoming call, but rather than showing me the contact's name, I'm shown their phone number. I don't have very many people's phone numbers memorized, so I still have to look at my iPhone screen to figure out who's calling me. I've gone through the manual and all the settings I could find, and I just can't seem to figure out how to get iDrive to show me names instead of numbers for incoming calls. Any ideas? |

It seemed to be phone and phone software dependent in earlier models
Which Iphone do you have and what Iphone software version?

I have the basic idrive and my iPhone 4 synced via Bluetooth. When an incoming call shows up on my screen it shows the phone number for a few seconds then it shows the contact related to the phone number. Almost as if it has to run through the database first and find the right contact. Only takes a couple rings for it to figure it out.

I have an iPhone 4s with the latest software. I do have a lot of contacts. Not a whole bunch, but probably more than average. I wonder if I go through and clear out some contacts I don't use anymore, maybe that would speed up the process... |

Get someone to be with you when they call, then you can let it ring a long time and see if it displays the name eventually.

Yeah. I have a ridiculous number of contacts. My iPhone 4 has the most up to date software on it as well. But the 4s might have newer bluetooth hardware. I'll look into it. In my opinion it shouldn't matter the number of contacts because its a simple dbase search. Does your F30 have the enhanced cluster? I noticed a slight difference in functionality on the F30 I test drive with the enhanced cluster.
...ok the 4s does have newer Bluetooth hardware supporting Bluetooth 4 http://gigaom.com/apple/the-secret-payload-of-the-iphone-4s-bluetooth-4-0/ Still not sure if that means anything though. |

hmm, this is happening with my 2013 X3 with nav.
Did you ever find a solution. BTW, my contact list DID show names at one point. My phone is a Blackberry Q10

Not sure if this is relevant as a) I don't have my BMW yet, and b) I live in the UK...
BUT! In my Jaguar XF, if my contacts have the international number format, e.g. +44 1234 567890 then the contact name doesn't appear, just the telephone number. When I change the contact number to remove the country code, e.g. 01234 567890 then the contact name appears. This is with an Android 4.2 handset. It may be the same issue? |
