Re: M# pricing from Germany - update

Here are the official prices from BMW Germany (as of June 2007) for the 2008 M3 - Please keep in mind that this price is the German price (not US cost) but will give all of us some reference. Enjoy.

Fahrzeugpreise (Prices are shown in EUROS!!!)

Das M3 Coupé ist serienmäßig mit einem 6-Gang-Schaltgetriebe ausgestattet.
(Says - comes standard with a speed manual)

EUR* 56.008 ohne MwSt. (w/o 19% luxury tax)

EUR* 66.650 inkl. 19% MwSt. (with 19% luxury tax)

Here is the converted German price -> US $ Dollars

Like I said before this is the German price and not what the M3 will cost here in the US.

Currency Conversion Results

Jun 15, 2007 EURUSD= EURO 56008 US $ 74,591.-

Exchange rate : 1.3318 US Dollars for 1 EURO

I suggest we compare the German price of a 335i (fully loaded) to the base price of the M3.

In comparison, the base price for a 335i = EURO 44650 US $ 59,735
So, it looks as if the difference between the two cars (calculated using base price)
is $ 14856.

BMW 335ifan

Hope this helps.

BMW335ifan (maybe new M3 fan) have not bought the car yet - waiting until next year.

My math is probbaly off but if a base 335 is $44,650 US and $59,735 Euro that means there's a 1.34% difference in price. If we use that same 1.34% and divude it by $74,591 (Euro to USD price), it comes to $55,665 USD.

I think a base MSRP of around $55K sounds about right for the E92 M3.

Selective choice of ratios

The SA and German prices ratios seem to give reasonable US prices (mid 50's) but this method with the UK prices gives a US price well into the $60k's. Some ratios seem to work, some don't. I've given up on ratios and am just sticking with my gut ($55-60k). However, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see US base >$60k.

I agree. It would be unwise for BMW to go into the 60k base range, they would lose customers to the New Skyline Twin Turbo and especially to Porsche. Price will be determined by standard equipment. Base with lots of options as standard could push into the high 50s. I hope it comes with few options so the base is lower. This way I can get a lighter car and can choose what options I feel are must haves rather than BMW making the desision. BMW would make more money this way because most people will look at the price as reasonable then overspend by loading it up with expensive options. The options are where car companies make their easy money. I would suspect the DCT will be a fairly expensive cost option over the MT to cover R&D costs.

I agree with most of what you are saying. In order keep out of the 911s way, BMW will have to sell the base M3 relatively bare bones, just like Porsche does with the 911, and the options will add up fast. I don't think BMW needs to recover the full R&D costs of DCT from E92 sales though. If it turns out to be any good, I'm sure it will find its way into many other BMW products, so the cost recovery could be spread out.

Agreed.

Since BMW doesn't offer an automatic tranny with the M3 (and rightly so) putting an unreasonable price on DCT may drive out roughly 50% of the American market (people who don't want a standard manual). I honestly don't expect it to be much more (if any) than SMG was on the E46 (A bit under $3000 if I remember right).
