Track day tire/wheel setup: how to get the most laps for the buck?

Hi,

This is my first post, though I was in read-only mode for long. I love my 1M, which had its first track day last week. Enjoyed every bit of it, but this car can eat PS2s quick! (I did a few DEs in my previous car, a Z4 - which had less weight, less HP -> less wear and tear.)

So, here is my question: what tire/wheel setup you recommend for a track day newbie (still using MDM) who just wants to have a great time with the car, not competing anyone? I would like to make my track days relatively affordable so I can do more of them throughout the season. I am willing to change my wheels at the track and only use my "track wheels" in the dry.

As I see it now, the tread on PS2s could be finished in a couple dozen laps. How many track miles/kms/sessions/days can you do on one set of tires? What track tires would you pick if your goal is not ultimate grip, but reasonable tire cost per lap?

What do you think about using some 18" wheels with 245/35R18 front, 265/35R18 rear? These are smaller diameter than stock, but offer more cheap tire choices. Do you think these sizes could be OK? Or do I really have to go with /40 if going down to 18" wheels?

Thanks guys!

My track setup is 18 inch Apex Arc 8 wheels with Hankook Ventus R-S3 that were shaved. The sizes are 265/35/18 front and 285/35/18 rear on stock suspension. Talk with Harold at HP Autowerks for a great deal and check out this thread for more info:

Thanks for your answer. How much use can you get out from one set of RS-3s on the track? I did read HP's thread, but being in Europe, ordering wheels and tires from them is probably not an option for me. Also, the focus of the pros over there seems to be getting down as much tire as possible - not exactly my intention for now. Finally RS-3s do not meet some EU environmental standards, hence not available here. Any thoughts about Federal 595RS-Rs? Or any other recommendations for cost-effective track day tires? Also, I just would like to learn how much track driving I can reasonably expect to get out from one set of tires.

Looking for 18" wheels to fit our cars available in Europe. What ET (offset) range would work? I know that comp wheels are 31 front, 25 rear and the M3 comes with 29F/23R 18"s, but how much can one go above or below those values while using M3 default rim widths (8.5" front, 9.5" rear)? For example, for the front would ET 38 be OK? (Stock suspension, stock tire width.) Thanks!
