What are you opinions regarding facebook?
I know this is off-topic, but I remember that a lot of the z4um members and by extension the zpost members were IT and computer people.
What are your opinions about facebook? Is it bad to join and have your pictures up and personal info there, etc? Of course, you can set your privacy settings, and only my friends can see my profile, but just how secure are these websites? I'm not a computer guy, so I'm very interested in your opinions. |

I have not experience with facebook. But I do use MySpace. I thought it was going to be lame but it's helpped me keep in touch with friends from high school and college. Pretty dandy when you've moved around quite often after school and lost touch with people. I also don't put anything on my page that I wouldn't tell anyone or that the public wouldn't already know about me.

Myspace sucks.
I'm on Facebook. Actually connected with some old friends through the site. It's cleaner than Myspace, that's for sure. Less scum. They should kick the high schoolers off, though.

facebook is definately cool. I was totally against anykind of thing like that until i found out all my family in london and all my old high school buddies there were on it. In london they pretty much use that for email in some cases.
So its pretty good to keep in touch the only bad thing is that i've had a few mates that have been "tagged" in pictures they wouldn't want their mrs seeing |

Facebook should not be compared to MySpace IMO.
MySpace is like the Internet in the mid 90's. It's impossible to actually create an aesthetically pleasing webpage. As far as I can see, there is no major benefit to using MySpace. Facebook is impressive - it scratches the surface of what social networking sites will eventually do for everyday life. I love the way it will tell me if someone (who I don't know, and perhaps have never met) posts photos of my friends. I also am impressed with the other cool features, for example, you can keep a list of movies you'd like to see, and Facebook will tell you who else in your contacts also wants the see the film. Makes it that much easier to arrange things (such as a trip to the cinema in this example), and so there are genuine real world advantages to Facebook. And this is still the beginning, there's lots more to come. |

I agree facebook is great. For someone who doesn't usually have enough time to keep up with how his friends are doing, it helps you do that. It's not like I'm checking online rather than speaking or going out with these people, but rather these are people I would have totally lost touch with or not seen or spoken to at all.
What I was hoping the IT/computer people on the forum could give us opinions on is what they think about the security/confidentiality of sites like these. |
