My BMW remote app

Have any of you tried this? Although, the app said it would only work with newer vehicles 2010 onward, reading a bit further it will actually work with vehicles built on/after September 2008 (like mine).

Not too much functionality on mine, but I'm still able to do the following:

Remotely lock or unlock my car. This will be nice I ever think did I lock my car.
Vehicle position via a google standard, satellite or hybrid map.
Google local search which allows me to search for things and transfer the details (such as address etc) to the vehicle.

Not the most powerful app, but a nice thing to have and it's free. Question is will I ever use it

Cheers,

Charlie

Here's a question, if you're doubting yourself on whether you actually locked the doors, would you actually trust an App to do the job for you - how do you in fact know it worked???

Very true! You can go into the history and it confirms if the service was performed successfully or not. But you still reliant on the app telling you the truth.

Let's face it though, if your away from your car (and can't get to it) and you have that thought it's better than thinking; yes, I'm sure I did, it'll be OK

I wonder what this will do on a 2010 car then, assuming there is more functionality post i-Drive update?

How does it KNOW which is your car? What's to stop people just running around unlocking cars in car parks? I guess it will be something to do with confirming the connection in the car first time....? I hope so....

In newer cars you can control Remote Light Flash (to locate your vehicle) and Remote Climate Control (for the X3).

Reference security, you need an active BMW Assist Contract and need to jump through the hoops there before you get user names and password etc. There's also various security questions that need to be submitted/answered on the website, so it seems secure enough. Additionaly, aach time the app is opened you need to enter a 4 digit pin (to stop your mates playing jokes on you ).

Thing that annoys me is this. You can show the car location - I thought this would be great because if I'm overseas (or even down the pub) I can check my car is where I thought it was.

However, I found out last night that if you're more than 1500m away it says "Car location hidden for privacy reasons" so what fecking use is that? It's my car and my phone! I have a right to know!!

The BMW Remote App is excellent. It was a little trouble to set up trying to get my login info correct but after I got that it works great. Because I have an '08 328xi it's a little limited but the fact that it finds my car exactly where it is down to the address and locks/unlocks my doors is amazing!

Do you get the "privacy" issue I mentioned above in the US? Or is it different??

I completely agree with you on this. BMW does make another app called parking assistant that can help in parking situations but hiding the car for "privacy reasons" is not very useful.

Can you lock/unlock doors when you're more than 1500m away?

Since I downloaded the app I've tried it a few times, locking and unlocking the doors and it's always worked on 3G and Wifi. I guess you just have to trust it.

I don't know - I haven't tried. I thought this would be the solution to the nagging doubt I always get as soon as I sit down on a plane - did I lock the car......?

Have you tried to transfer anything from the app to your BMW? I've locked/unlocked and located my '08 328 but I haven't tried to send any info to the car. Does it send an address to the navigation? How does it work?

Yes you can find any location on Google Maps and send it to the car in exactly the same way as you can do from the BMW Routes Internet Portal (I don't know if you get this your side of the pond). You can then send the location or a specific journey to the car and it's waiting for you as a destination in the navigation system. Very useful.

My wife will call me at work and say you haven't locked the car. She will then confirm if it has locked remotely. Works every time.

I've also locked the keys in the car while washing it. I do have a second set of keys but they aren't always to hand. The app has it's uses.

Will I still be able to remotely send addresses to the idrive even once my connected drive has lapsed?

Once connected drive has lapsed, no. How can you lock your keys in the car?

That's crap! Didn't realise you couldn't do that, as it would have been a nice additional security feature to ensure the car was where you left it. Perhaps they've done this so they're not stepping on Trackers toes

Perhaps. But why should they give a shite about tracker companies?

I hope any new owners of your cars stand there whilst you unpair your phones otherwise you'll be doing their heads in locking/unlocking their car at will

Nothing to do with the phone pairing, Roger. It's an app like any other, to which you supply your details and logon information. It knows your vehicle details through your connected drive subscription.
