M3 Mechanics Magazine

Hey everybody!

I am traveling around Europe now, and of course I am hunting the new M3.
As I am from here, I talked the former dealer and the people that I used to buy cars from. The chef for the mechanics department is a former friend, and gave me all the info he had.

I had to leave my ID (!!) in order to ensure I was to bring it back within 24hours, and no information missing. Of course, I am not supposed to take pictures, but oh well... They even included large posters (which he actaully gave me afterwards ) and original pieces of the engine ( -> check out the picure with my hand..)

So, even though a lot of this is not anything new, it is information not for the public but rather for the engineers. Also, the three main competitors are the 911 C2, RS4, CLK 63 AMG, but of course we knew that. Regardless, check out the pictures and I dont wanna hear any "This is a repost" please!!

Best wishes,

CSL

Wooww.....

If only I could read German. Great stuff:rocks:

Now, I saw 2 small circles in Red and Green on the top view of M3 diagram, whats that?

And the rear view showing the quad pipes with "100%" with arrows pointing either way?

I think that shows the center of gravity (horizontally). in the later pages they describe how the carbon-fiber roof helped lower the center of gravity (vertically).

That talks about the M-Differential distributing 100% of the power to both wheels -- and obviously back and forth depending on the conditions.

I am curious what it says at the bottom of that page - comparing the Porsche Carrera 911, Audi RS4 and Mercedez Benz CLK 63 AMG.

Excellent post CSL-Fanatik! :rocks:

Muffler visibility

A bit OT but ... do take notice of how in EVERY single rear shot the ugy exposed muffler canister is hidden by shadow, angle, p-chop, etc. I think BMW does know that the exposed muffler is in fact quite ugly!

If you have no idea what I'm talking about just dig around here, you'll find the thread.

Thank You

"....M-Differential distributing 100% of the power to both wheels?" = No loss in power from engine ==>wheels?

That would indeed be nice but is not true, a better interpretation of the words would be: "a 100% of the power at the differential may be transfered to each wheel". You still have drivetrain loss, unless you manage to make a drivetrain with no mass...

Here ya go:

BMW M3
What does represent a real sports car? The focus on speed and acceleration? Does it have to be a "bend specialist"? How much agility, spontaneity and reaction does a real sports car driver need? Which level of precision and control can be achieved? That are the questions the development engineers again dealt with referring the new M3. The high-speed engine concept is the right answer to the demand for highest agility referring throttle response. It was clear that this concept would be retained, but furthermore improved by a big leap. This improvement results in a totally new car with new engine, new chassis and a new drivetrain aswell as new styling and interior. And last but not least with a multitude of possibilities for the driver to have his own M3. In short: Just like the predecessors BMW managed it again to take the lead with the totally new vehicle development of the M3.

The Competitors:
Porsche 911 Carrera
The classics among the sports cars. Very sporty designed chassis. Individual settings only when ordering expensive special equipment. Unlike the M3 the 911 is rather a two-seater with little trunk space. This results in a clearly limited road capability.

Audi RS4
Competitor on the same power level, but at a considerably higher weight. Now following BMW with high-speed engine concept. BUT: Superiority of the BMW rear wheel drive compared to the all-wheel drive of the Audi, especially due to the perfect steering of the M3.

Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG
More comfort than sports-car-feeling orientated, the most powerful but not the most agile car of the competitive environment.

Best regards, south

I agree that the muffler is not very pretty, but I am going to stay away from saying it is ugly untill I have seen it in person. How often does one actually look under the car at an angle where you see it? And then I am sure there will be some aftermarket stuff with a different rear, which will hide it eventually.

Best regards,

CSL
