Serious about a 335
Before I dive in I just wanted to say have done a fair amount of research on this site about the reliability/common problems and have read a lot of complaining.
I have a offer on my 2004 Audi TT 225 and I am seriously ready to buy a CPO 335. I have always loved turbo cars but I am a little hesitant about the reliability and the cost to own after the extended warranty is up. However with that said, I performed all the maintenance on my Audi TT including the timing belt. I am very mechanically inclined and could fix most problems I experienced with it. Is the 335 way more complicated in terms of servicing it or trouble shooting problems ect.? Should I feel comfortable with the purchase? Thanks, |

Right now there are 120 people viewing this particular forum. OF them, many are probably looking for solutions to or insight about problems or potential problems. There are hundreds of thousands of owners who have never been to nor heard of this site. Forum posts, like many business reviews or product reviews tend to be skewed towards the negative and it looks kind of scary when all the problems are listed all in one place. All that being said, a 335i will probably have more, and more expensive problems in its life than a Honda Accord. But the thing to keep in mind is that having your car in the shop is not the end of the world and is pretty much an unavoidable fact of life. You will just end up paying more, so budget accordingly.

^ this. Currently coming from a modded b5 S4, everyone posting online about reliability usually has had something negative happen.
I was very skeptical when buying the s4 b/c of all the stuff i read on the internet, but it was a great deal and i took the leap. So far, not one thing has gone wrong *fingers crossed*. In the next few months when i sell it and buy an e90 335i, im just going to make sure the maintenance was completed accordingly and pick a clean one with the options i want. In all honesty, its a vehicle, they've mechanical machines and inevitably something will break during its lifespan. Just take care of it and it will take care of you. Like djjasper said, budget accordingly; good luck with the purchase |

My primary car will always be under warranty...so 3-4 years old max. My experience with BMW's is they are well made and understressed. Hopefully someone with 80,000 miles on a 335i will chime in and share their experience! Good luck.

I bought my 07 335 with 24k miles and yes stuff went wrong with it, but I took care of it in warranty. Now with 49k and a year out of warranty nothing has gone wrong and I believe it is just because I took care of the problems already. I believe anything else that goes wrong would go wrong with a non turbo as well , such as pumps , battery, etc. so just take care of the problems under warranty and you should be fine.

I have a 335 with 107k miles and 406whp/442wtq. I had wastegate rattle that was pretty bad when I was out of warranty. I went ahead and replaced the turbos with RB Turbos. Other then that, no problems! The only fuel pump change was due to the recall, but the car didn't need it. I do oil changes every 5k (which some people think is excessive) and make sure all other maintenance is done on time.

I have 26,000 miles on my 2011 335 and it runs flawlessly.
I had 49,000 miles on a 2007 328, it too ran flawlessly. I have 25,000 miles on a current 2010 328 and since the day I bought it, although the dealer says it's ok, I would always say it "just never runs perfectly". There's just something about it that I can't put my finger on that makes it not as good as the 2007 I had. I really find that everyone's mileage varies with each car. The bottom line is that if you're buying used, chances are if it never had any problems from the start, they will stay pretty clear as long as you keep it well maintained. |
