Had engine light come on. Increased emissions?
What caused this?

Did you also get the warning telling you that the car will not be able to start after "X" amount of miles/kilometres?

No I didnt get that message come up about limited miles.
Is there any way of checking the other possibilities?

Only way would be is if you had a tool that scans for trouble codes. Good chances that it might be the NOx sensor or the DEF valve as already mentioned.
