? on Semi-WOT on 6MT 335i ... has this happened to you?
I noticed something a few weeks ago that I'm able to reproduce on a consistent basis. I've never done WOT on the car since there's nowhere to do it, but I do a semi-WOT sometimes on a long hill (that I can see everything). This is the scenario:
I start out in 1st with light throttle (because I'm making a turn on to the hill); I shift to 2nd, and if the throttle is more than 1/2 open, the revs will jump up (to 5-6K RPM) but there's no real acceleration happening. Is this just the nature of turbo lag or something more serious? In fact, I get almost no power unless I let the revs dropped down around 2K RPM or so, then I feel the acceleration kicking in. Thanks to you gearheads in advance!! |

Yes, except it happens in 2nd gear .. DAG NABBIT .. there goes my reserve fund. Is this something that can be done by a reputable Indy shop or does it need to be done by BMW (because they're the only ones that can get the parts). Excuse my ignorance :/ |

lol ... I bought the car used 2 months ago, but until today I had no idea how to test to see clutch slippage during the initial drive. I glad you guys are here, I had even worse diagnosis in mind (failed turbos). Hard lesson learned, but I'm all the better for it.

ok to do a quick test if the clutch is slipping.
do not break any of your local driving laws when attempting to do this Get car to normal operating temp (turbo only) temporally turn off traction control find a nice straight level road that has clear visibility (no other cars nearby) a dry road helps but not required. (use common sense) drive lightly till car is idling (850 - 950rpm) in third gear and then shift to 5th gear and let it fully engage WOT the accelerator the car and engine speed should move about the same rate. -- If you hear/see the rpms climb and the car speed does not closely match RELEASE THROTTLE, and have clutch serviced. it may aslo skip (feel like the car is surging) if it is at the verge of being worn out still get clutch serviced. turn on traction control I know this works cause it can be done in a miata (non turbo) and it requires no skill, just common sence. |
