2008 335i Vrs 335XI

So I am looking to get a 2008 2 door 6 speed MT 335i or 355XI.

I am trying to understand if having AWD will be worth it. Is the AWD system split 50-50 all the time or will the car very the split depending on conditions? I would like to track the car every now and then and I am told that the system is static split 50-50 all the time and this will cause the nose to push through the corners and not be as track able as a 2 WD.

Thoughts?
And any other Pro or Cons related to getting 335i Vrs 335XI?

Thanks....

I would never consider it in the south, just adds extra weight.

It's 200LBS give or take in weight....

I just don't know much about the AWD systems on BMWs witch is why I asked.

You're from FL. Why do you need AWD? That's just more stuff to break. From what I understand, the xi(xDrive before they started calling it that) only kicks in under certain conditions. It's an electronic system not a permanent mechanical system. Also RWD > AWD. Look at F1, Nascar, Indy, everything besides rally pretty much.

I come from AWD cars like Evo's and such and driving them in SCCA and really enjoyed having AWD.

I am used to driving AWD cars.

So I just don't want to buy a 2 WD car and wished I'd gotten the AWD.

The suspensions sucks in the 335xi however the car has a ton of potential, just like the post above me I came from the Evo world and truly I can't see me driving anything that doesn't have AWD. A few suspension upgrades and you should really see a significant difference in the vehicle.

Well the 335XI that I am looking at has the sport packang...

I see you have the 335XI and an Evo... How does the AWD system compair? Would you have gotten the 335xi or the 335i if you had it to do all over again?

Besides the SUVs, BMWs are designed to be RWD. Why are M3s and 335is's only rwd? If you want an AWD car, get one that is designed to be one.

BMW designs awesome rwd cars, that is true, but BMW also designs awesome awd cars. In many reviews, BMW's xdrive has come out ahead of audi's quattro system, amongst others. Not sure where you're getting the idea that BMW just kinda tacked awd onto their cars without thinking it through.

The sport package on the xi doesn't change anything on the suspension. If you plan on any track days, I highly recommend new dampers/springs, but most importantly rear M3 sway bar and subframe bushings.

I just put in my order for TC Kline S/A True Match w/ Swift springs, along with the ///M parts for the rear. Really looking forward to a transformed car for the upcoming track season.

However, you live in Florida, so in my opinion there should be absolutely no reason to consider the xi. The xi transfercase isn't cheap if it fails, (ask me how I know) and the system adds unnecessary weight and drivetrain losses. Not to mention xi means special downpipes, front suspension, etc. I just happen to live where it can be practical during the winters, so I am trying to make the best of it.

Cheers,
Alex

BMW motto, over engineered and under designed. xDrive was not at the forefront of BMW's minds when they put it on their cars. They kind of throw it on. OP does not need AWD so why get it? RWD is better for these cars. Also, as OP said the awd adds about 200lbs, but where? These cars have good weight balance but how does the awd affect it?

More weight = "slower"

Engine has to move more weight, granted it's not 500lbs but...

I'm referring to the distribution of the weight in that sentence.

I agree with you 100%. BMW has a great AWD system that is not only good in their suv's:

To OP, i wouldn't recommend you get awd. You live in florida so it's not really necessary however if you really don't think you could live without it and you'll miss it then you should. The weight difference shouldn't be all that noticeable and you'll probably enjoy it much more in situations like when it's raining.
