335i Affordable for an 18 year old part time student?
I'm a part time student planning on attending university in fall.
My father wants to buy me a car to take with me to university. I've lowered my choices to a 2008 BMW 335I coupe or a 2008 G37S 6MT. I cannot decide which one to get. Im going to take the responsibility of paying for insurance and the maintenance of the car. My question is, how expensive is maintenance on a 335i? Do you think I would be able to afford it? Since i'll be working part time im estimating i'll be making 600-700 dollars a month from a part time job. How expensive is a 335i in the future? do they have any common expensive problems pros and cons of the 335i? |

Do not do it. I know you really really want to and you really really think you can but there are more important things right now than paying for an expensive car. Focus on school and get a reliable car. Get an Acura TSX or something. Nice, affordable, and most of all reliable.

As long as your dad is buying it, he has a vested interest in the car. He's not going to leave you hanging if the car needs work, be real. Insurance on a 335i is cheap (at least if you're over 29), so because you mentioned this word, "father," you can absolutely afford the 335i or G37. The G37 would most likely be more reliable.

If you were serious I second the above. Acuras are nice cars and being at their heart Hondas, extremely reliable. I had an RSX several years ago and had 0 problems over 85k miles of ownership. Plus depending on where you live, if it snows, you'll want a fwd car for a year round driver. Good fuel efficiency and fwd does great in the snow with dedicated snow tires.

I have a 328i, so i'm not really in the right position to give you advice about the 335i and its maintenance. But all I can say is to test drive them both, and do not rush with your decision; see which one you really like because i'm assuming you are going to have to stick with that car until you graduate?.. Now you are on a BMW forum so obviously most people will side with the 335i, but it truly is an amazing car. Considering you live in Canada, you may also want to look for a 335xi for the rough seasons...And ignore all those people above with the negative comments, I'm sure in the future when/if they have kids and are financially comfortable, they too would put there kids in a nice car. If you can afford it, why not! Welcome to the forums!

Buy yourself an s2000, it's super cheap to maintain. I would only own a 335 with a factory or cpo warranty or if I did my own work but the parts are still pricey. A 328i 6spd would be a good choice warranty Or not. Just make sure you get a pre purchase inspection at a place that specializes in that kind of vehicle.

If its low miles and a clean history, and CPO (id say 2009+) you are clean and pretty much clear. Occasional problems that are costly. Im almost out of CPO and been lucky so far. Then again ive put on only 2k miles lol

--- in all seriousness though, are your parents paying for both your college and car? My opinion would be to wait until you finish college, and land a decent paying job, then buy car. You'll appreciate the car a lot more since you bought it with your own money, and you'll have a steady flow of income to pay for repairs, etc But hey, if everything is taken care of financially by your parents, do what you want. Different priorities I guess, but when I was 18, I wasn't thinking about BMWs or what I wanted as a first car. I was thinking about trying to get through the first year of college. Don't get a 335i unless your parents are fully paying for it, including maintenance and all extraneous fees. You'll probably be fine for the first 2 years, but once that 4 year maintenance goes out, you'll be paying for everything. Keep in mind, oil change at the dealership cost $100, then add other maintenance fees. Also, 335i eats oil like crazy, depending on how you drive, expect to top it off once in a while which is $10.99 each.

Funny how an 18 year old with a part time job and still depending on his parents, just "lowered" his options to a BMW 335i.
What did he originally have in mind? A fully loaded 2012, 7-series? Spoiled little fuckers. |

I almost think the context of the OP is that he "narrowed" his choices. Only the OP can say for sure....

If you have to ask you can't afford it besides you're going to college...Study and get chicks that's all that matters and trust me you will not be impressing any other students.Shouldn't be paying auto repair bills while in college to begin with.
