Winter Tire sizes
[FONT=Arial Black]Hello to the E90 community. This is my first post. I have followed this forum with great interest. I have on order a 2006 325i SP Terra. I live in Montreal, our winters are harsh. I have read posts here indicating winter tire sizes but I have a question to which I cannot find an answer: I will change to a winter-specific mags tire combo. I want to have rims in size 17-8 so that they will also fit a 330 should I decide to change for a 330 in future. The Tire Rack recommended fitting for the E90 17 inch rims is 225.45.17. Now I am afraid the 45 aspect may be too low for our pothole infested streets plus 225 to wide to effectively prevent sliding. For more bite I would prefer to buy 215.50.17 tires on the 17 inch rims which fit E90s. Is this possible ? I want to ask you before I tals to my salesperson/tech department which may not know/care.
Thanks |

No runflats? No winter tire options?
I think you need to read www.tirerack.com more carefully. I see many options. |

re: also check Discount Tire Direct
I just purchased the following tires and wheels for our new 2006 330i with the sport package:
Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 DSST http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...d=009281&ar=45 Beyern Mesh Wheels (17") http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...09281&bp=5-120 Discount Tire matched the Tire Rack's price on the Dunlops including mounting, balance and shipping. Actually they beat TR price by a few dollars. BTW, Tire Rack does not sell the Beyern rims. I should note that Discount changes you ($55) for a mounting kit (20 wheel nuts). You can pass on the kit. I wasn't sure if I needed it, so I had the kit included. If I do not use the kit when my snow tires/wheels are eventually mounted late this Fall, it can be returned for a full refund. Discount's website currently indicates that they are out of the Beyern rims, but mine showed up yesterday. |

Discount Tire Package
The above listed package (Beyern Wheels + Dunlop Sport M3 runflat snows) ran $1457.
That includes shipping and the $55 for the mounting kit. Your question on the mounting (bolt) kit was the same one I had. Since I wasn't sure, I took the kit. It can always be returned for a refund. Thanks. |

BMW sells complete factory winter tire / wheel packages in Europe. There are a variety of 16" and 17" wheel options for non 330i cars. The 330i is limited to 17" Alloy wheels due to brake rotor size. To my knowledge there is no steel wheel option for the 330i. I purchased one of the factory sets for my 330i through Joe Kelly at Tom Hesser BMW in Pennsylvania. The set consists of Bridgestone Blizzak LM22 RFT tires on Model 158 wheels. I paid about $1800 for the set (about $400 below list w/ my CCA discount). This is expensive but I believe the BMW wheels are more robust than aftermarket wheels and will fit perfectly. I have had bad luck with some wheels I've purchased from Tire Rack and with many styles it will be impossible to find a replacement if you wreck a wheel.

Is there any reason to not take the runflats off of my stock Type 162 (Front: 18x8 ET34 225/40 R18, Rear: 18x8.5 ET37 255/35 R18) and put on some Blizzaks?
After the winter I plan on getting some 19" Summer rims and tires. Possibly Type 199 (Front: 19x8 ET37 225/35 R19Y, Rear: 19x9 ET39 255/30 R19Y) or SP3 Chrome by Carre Wheels Price per Wheel $335 |

What it wont do is take into account normal air pressure losses that occur with every tyre. That, coupled with the fact that the tyre is a runflat, you ordinarally won't be able to visually determine when the tyres are getting low in air. That's why you should carry a pressure guage in the car to periodically check the pressures (because the ones at petrol stations are usually inaccurate). I check my pressure whenever I fill up and always 'overinflate' by a litte. Then later in the evening after they've had a chance to cool off, I use my guage to deflate them to the correct pressure. Also, keep in mind that winter tyres should be inflated a little higher than summer tyres because air contracts when it's cold. If you're using your guage outside on the street with tyres that have been sitting for a while then it shouldn't be a problem to put the normal pressure in. If you're measuring your tyres in your garage which is say 15 C when it's -10 C outside, then there tyres will actually 'lose' pressure outside as the air contracts due to the cold. So it's wise to leave a couple of extra PSI to counteract this.

So are there any winter run-flat tires that will fit the 162 rims on my 330i with sport package? I figure that way I could let the stock rims take the winter wear and tear, and put some nice BBS or Hamman rims on come spring.
