Calling all paint chip experts

3 tiny paint chips with evidence of primer on the hood. Not big on touch up paint because of the obvious blobbing so I considered one of those paint pens from Bavarian Auto.so anyone here who have used this product or any ideas would be appreciated. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Dr Colorchip

There factory matched paint is better than the OEM paint and it doesn't blob up at all .

Who's factory matched paint? I've heard Dr. color chip may be better than BMWs OEM color systems but is there anything else? Is there a downside to the color system

Honestly I don't think a chip can ever be fixed to the point where it's gone. I let a pro touch one up and he spent over 1 hour doing it. In the end, I appreciated his efforts, but I could have just used my OEM paint tube and dabbed the chip. They're bound to happen, so touch up and forget it imho.

I used Dr colorchip on my silver car....paint matched great but you can still see where the chip is. seems more like a rust preventative than anything IMO

i have had a lot of success using the oem touchup paint, dab it on with a toothpick, in layers, bring it up just under the level of surface paint, then couple layers of clear so that it is just over the surface, then wet sand with very fine paper wrapped around an old school pink eraser as a backing (has some flex to match hood contour). this leaves the paint dull so expect to polish and work it back up to a shine. sounds scary, isn't too bad though, the wet sand is the hard part and easy to f-up, you can go through your clear coat if you sand too hard or worse make the paint uneven where you rubbed. the results are very nice if done right.

I too have used cover up paint and then a few layers of clearcoat. The clear coat really helps to hide it more than just putting the paint on itself.

The Dr. Color Chip commercial makes it seem like it disappears 100%, but I highly doubt that. Rock chips are a pain I just resprayed both my bumpers in that battle.

I love Dr. Color chip. There are chips I cannot find anymore because they blended so well.

You have to be patient and get the technique down. And this stuff only works on chips, not scratches or dents or gouges of any kind. Just rock chips and that's it.

Sounds good but trust me that in my haste I'll F it up. Thinking the paint pen with a dab and run method without much fuss is my best shot. Thanks for the help though.

BUMP!
Sorry to jack the thread but,
I just got a pretty bad chip today. It's well under the paint and actually left a divot...
What should I do in terms of repair? Dealership? I'm sure this would be expensive.
Thanks in advanced,

Dealership is the last place you want to go for something like this.

Take it to a reputable paint shop. They should be able to touch that up.

Unfortunately, it looks like it will require more than a "touch up." Do they also fill in the crevice?

Sean - on my other cars, I had to have the front plate holes filled. Same as your ding - they would fill it, buff it, respray and clear coat it. Wait until after winter though as our roads suck here and we are suppose to get dumped on.

OP - I had a lot of difficulty matching paint (LeMans Blue). If you have a lot of metal flake in it, you might not get a great match. Take it to a body shop or BMW certified repair facility. Have them spray out a few plaques and pick the one that matches best.

Yea it's a JOKE !! Do not waste your money on it. I guess if you're not very particular about you paint and finish it would be OK but for the price it's not worth it. I have tried it on two different cars and I don't care how long you try to get the "technique" down the results are no better than I can do with regular touch up and some different brushes. Every time I see that damn commercial it makes me laugh.

+1

I tried the Dr.Colorchip system and it does help a little to hide all the chips but they are still visible.
To me it was a waste of money.
Respray is the only solution if you have lots of chips.
Save that money for a clearbra.

The Langka worked well for me on previous cars. The first repair was mediocre and then I started getting better and better at it, just like anything else paint wise.
