BMW windshield

Is there a difference between BMW windshield glass and a replacement windshield? Ever since I have had my windshield replaced my rain sensor has not worked as well.

Yes, there IS a difference, it's about $400...

read his post carefully, he is saying he DOESN'T have the OEM one

that being said, the windshield replacement guy told me that there's no difference, just the price and the BMW logo on the OEM glass

Ask "Got F1" he knows all about it. Works for Nationwide.
There are no aftermarket windshield manufacturers for BMW.

Safelite or any other company get the glass from the same place as BMW does with logos and everything same glass.

I've been through this with the driver side window.

Don't quote me on this, but this is the basic principle:

2 sensors pointing at the glass. 1 is send, the other is recieve. the SEND flashes a instant burst of infrared light and is bounced of the windshield into the RECIEVE. The computer calculates the time it took for the flash to get from point A to point B. If there is an obstruction (a rain drop in this case), then it reduces the time it takes for that flash of light to get to the recieve sensor, and as a result the computer activates the appropriate speed for the wipers accordingly.

Correct me if I'm wrong BTW.

Bmw uses pilkington for the glass. There is no difference between the two other than the symbol.

You may actually be right, but I don't understand how it would work. Both sensors are on the INSIDE of the glass, so water droplets would not interfere with the transimssion and reception of the IR beam, would they?

It is to do with reflective properties of glass. In fibre optic cables, light will bounce off the sides of the glass cable at small angles down the fibre optic cable unless it hits it above a certain angle (say for example 90 degrees). The same principle is being used with the windscreen. signal is sent and bounces off edge of glass into receiver. But if there is water at the point of the glass where the signal hits, the signal will pass straight through the glass, hence the signal will not be received and the wiper will be set off.

My physics is a bit rusty

If it aint working properly but the same glass is used, I would say that the signal/ receiver is broken, or the glass isnt a snug fit as it was IMO

there's def a difference. Always ask for the original with the logo on the windshield. they say that for selling points...
