Probably coming back to a BMW

Having changed jobs earlier this year and having to give up my fantastic 320d M Sport for a dull as dishwater A4 Avant SE 130bhp! I am about to change jobs again. However instead of a fully expensed company car of choice I now have to fund my own car, maintenance, insurance and fuel with car allowance and mileage expenses.

This is all new to me and I'm swatting up on the pros, cons and pitfalls. The nice bit is going shopping for a car this weekend and don't know whether to buy a new or used 3 or 5 M Sport Touring, which engine, dealer finance or bank loan.

I need the car ideally by Christmas and considering the Country and car sales is on its ass I'm ready to 'drive the deal'.

I've got £600ish net per month to spend and minimal deposit to put down of up to £5k, ideally less.

Any advice, any deals I should be looking out for, what finance % rates are available?

Too much choice - that's a decent enough budget to get a very tasty car. Lombard recently quoted me 6.5% apr on a 3 year no deposit balloon. For a £31k car with a £12k balloon in 3 years = £634/month.

A 320d Sport Plus is coming out at £39k !!! Too many toys? I'll also be doing circa 25,000 miles per year minimum. Both add heavily to monthly figure.

Or I smoke around in the 924 turbo, but it will need £500 per month to maintain it with that mileage. Bloody expensive little thing!!

We are in a very similar situation- but I've just chosen to lease a merc . Probably only to be recommended if you are confident of staying in the job for 2 years.

I hear there are some good rates for Merc C Class at the minute, but the dealer I visited last week was keeping them close to his chest! Suggested £375/month with £5k down on a £30k car, but only 12,000 mile pa. iirc.

The merc dealers can't touch the rates offered by the lease companies. Bizarrely though, once I had placed the order via a lease co, the actual contract and supply is by mercedes corporate. New nov offers are due to be released in the next few days according to my supplier.

Guess some of us prefer a 'deal' to a 'bmw' right now. OP will have plenty of choice whichever route he goes down. Paying more interest than you need to on a traditional deal is something i'm sure none of us want to do.

I think the cheapest ones are on cars that must be carrying a big discount from the manufacturer, but are also likely to retain value well. The latter assumption may prove flawed however, once we enter the dark realms of the destruction of the euro zone......

Some homework today

Lease companies contacted can't offer a car to my spec. Stock cars only and/or business only

Audi suggesting an A6 can be sought for the same money as A4, in my budget but couldn't put a car or quote in front of me!! Awaiting response

Mercedes was a waste of time probably due to the old school salesman. Kept telling me what he can't do not what can be done. Dick!

BMW got a 5 series close to my spec and very close to budget. 3 series smack on spec, smack on budget and smack on timing.

BMW are in pole position at present..........

I've just arranged a contract hire car for my wife, and after going round many dealerships looking at different cars, I my experience not a single salesman or business manager knew half as much as I did about vehicle finance and contract hire in particular, and I don't claim to be an expert by any means.

If you are thinking about it, you need to speak to experts not the salesmen at dealerships. They have no interest in selling you a vehicle on contract hire and will tell you anything to persuade you that buying it is a good move.

We got a Nissan Qashqai 1.6 n-tec on a 3+23, 10K miles per yr, including full maintenance for £239/month.

I used http://www.contracthireacar.com after I saw the deal on http://www.contracthireandleasing.com. They were very good and didn't mess about. The whole thing was sorted in less than a week and delivered to my door 10 days later.

We bought her previous car new in cash 3 years ago and I am about to loose my shirt as no-one is buying private used cars. If I had contract hired that I would be about £1k-£1.5k better off at least.........
I'm never buying a car in cash again

I am considering swapping my E320cdi for this....

http://www.contracthireandleasing.co...class/4247350/

Just over £320 a month for a brand new £38k car.

No way I would buy a new 3 series now with the new one coming. Unless it was the new one you are considering.

Hi James, I have a second car for the wife (A Class), and a third car as my toy. This is a business tool and space is needed for kit and 25k+ miles per year. Space is also needed as a weekend family car for four. So as nice as the above is, its not for me.

The big issue with my monthly payment is the 25k+ miles per year and not wanting to keep a car for more than 3 years.

Currently a 3 series touring deal isn't cheap enough as an outgoing model (£39k @ £625). The A6 is a good price but I'm hoping to get it cheaper (£39k @ £622). The 5 series is too expensive v's the A6 (£40k @ £670). Need to revisit another Merc dealer as the first was shit.

I wouldn't be doing any of these deals through the dealers, they just can't compete.
Some of the contract hire places are getting up to 28% off new cars through Mercedes and Audi UK, the dealers are struggling to get 15%.

You can hire an E250cdi sport estate Edition 125 over 2 years for £2k deposit and just over £500 a month, that is doing 20k miles a year.
Going to 25K miles will add around £30 a month.

You can be into a C250cdi Sport estate edition 125 for £450 a month doing 25k miles a year.

These cars come with everything you need including comand and bluetooth and the prices are including vat.

You simply can't buy one cash and loose less than that.
