287 rims on 335i
I posted this question on the general discussion, but I wanted to ask here, too.
This is my 2nd post here and I've never had a BMW before, so excuse me if I'm "unedumacated." I recently ordered a 2011 335i with xdrive. I didn't get the sport package, but i still wanted the rims (i believe they're 287s). I found some on ebay and the size is 255/35/18 and 225/40/18. I thought I read somewhere else that you can't use certain rims/tires on an xdrive vehicle. Does anybody have any insight on this? Should I just resell the rims and keep the stock ones for now? I really want to avoid any kind of rubbing and of course, with having a brand new bmw, i really don't want to F-up the xdrive. Thoughts? Can it be done? Do I need to make adjustments of some sort? |

In short, what people are concerned with a staggered setup is the differing widths of the wheel and tire and consequently the different rolling diameters that the tires have(from front to rears). Different widths don't matter, but the rolling diameter difference between your front and rear tires need to be <1% - you can do the calculation by inputting the specs at the top of this section. Since the sport model 335i xdrive uses style 287 with the tire sizes you listed above, it obviously won't be a problem since BMW offers this option stock from the factory. Also I'm personally on style 189s with the same tire sizes on my 328xi, and can say from experience that the change is not an issue.

Not a problem using staggered OEM wheels on your xDrive.

Staggered?
So, what exactly is staggered? I guess on the same lines, what is squared? And how are spacers used?
Since I am unfamiliar with this, is this something I can take to the dealer and they can adjust/fix? |

Staggered are wider wheel/tires in the rear as the 287 has.
Square are same size front and rear. Spacers are placed between the wheel and the hub to push the wheel out, giving the car a wider stance. And those 287 will fit your car without any problem or adjustment.

I have an E90 and bought 189 rims for a winter setup. Purchased blizacks from tirerack and as per their suggestion got the 225/35s all around. Just got them mounted and balanced today and the rears looked so stupid. The wheel stuck out way beyond the tire and I was not happy. Called tirerack and they said it was safe and within acceptable tire and rim width stated by the tire manufacture. BS! Now tirerack is out of stock and do not have tires that would fix this issue, so I am stuck to return them at my cost.
Use the guide above and be sure to do your own research! |
