E90 cupholders...arrghh

Not a big fan of the weird cup holders BMW designed into these cars. Constantly feel I have to worry about my passenger taking out theirs with their knee OR feel like I am reaching on their lap for my coffee!

I look at that useless odd shaped storage nook (non-idrive car) in the center console (just aft of the shifter) and think couldn't that be used to hold some type of aftermarked cupholder assembly.

Has anyone figured out a better way for these cars to hold cups? Thanks.

Depends on how nice the "lap" is I suppose.

But seriously, all it takes is the right sized cup (BMW's cups work well, so do some of the Starbucks ones) and just a little education on the part of the driver to the passenger.

I like the cup holders. Keeps a tall cup out of the way in the center console when shifting.

You can take the bottom out and the cup will sit deeper w/ no danger of spilling.

I thought I would hate the cup holders, but I actually like them. They hold anything from a small energy drink up to a large mc donalds cup.

its because the cup holder is an after thought, the germans never understood why we need cup holders in our vehicles because in germany, driving is a job in itself and is taken seriously. no hand helds, no drinking, no eating.

I like them, I can't count the number of times passengers will just press them open to see what it does. Doesn't really bother me...

Think you need a drink pitched for humans.

Will never forget when I went to Florida, went to a place called Sweet tomatoes, she said would you like a drink and I said yes, would you like large, I thought year might aswell why not, and she proceeded to give me this ginormous monster chuffing bucket.

I was utterly shocked and requested a more normal sized drink.

Don't worry, they feel exactly the same way every time you reach for the shifter (even more so). Relocating the cup holder will not fix that problem, unless you relocate the shifter as well

They work fine for me. They do need to engineer a car that will give you a bj/hj while you drive, though.

Wow 21 posts in and this thing has deteriorated to nonsense. Does anyone know of an after market cupholder that will fit in the niche where the idrive controller would go in an idrive car?

IMHO I'd say 'search' is your friend. Check eBay or after market websites for a replacement. I'm sure someone else in the world has had the same complaint and thought..."hey, why don't I just customize a little cup holder thing here in the middle where this useless open/close contraption is."
