335i are known to be unpredictable... they typically have had or will have a HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) issues in the future... and out of warranty services to get this fixed is in the upper $$k to fix... usually FI engines don't last as long... NA engines are usually the cars that last the lifetime of ownership as long as they're maintained...

i'm sure you'll get more input to follow...

Some aspects of what you say are true besides the fact that all have had or will have HPFP issues my car has none its really luck of the draw just make sure you look at carfacts and past maintenance records, should be a good indicator of what you will face in the future.

Always be prepared for the worst when buying a turbo car out of warranty. Some are fine, others are not. Replacing things on euro cars sucks big time, compared to the Japanese turbo cars I've had.

With HPFP, BMW will cover it until 10 years or 120,000 miles. So that part is covered. With my 07 335i, only issue I had was few light bulbs going out and a sticky brake caliper. The car had 29,000 miles when I sold it and ran great. I miss that car already.

With maintenance programs and extended warranty that BMW offers, you can protect yourself. I would rather save the money that you would be spending on these BMW maintenace programs|warranty and spend it at a reputable BMW indy shop when things need to be replaced or repaired.

"Dear Valued Customer, BMW is committed to delivering the ultimate in product satisfaction to you, our customer. Our interest in your vehicle doesn't stop with its sale; rather, it continues throughout the vehicle's warranty period and beyond.
BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the high-pressure fuel pump of certain MY 2007/2008 BMW automobiles equipped with a 3.0 liter engine. We estimate that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a problem. Vehicles affected may have the Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated. Also, the affected vehicles may experience an extended engine starting time ("long crank***8221 or reduced engine performance when the high-pressure fuel pump malfunctions. As a commitment to our customers and to demonstrate our confidence in our product, BMW will extend the emissions warranty for the high-pressure fuel pump to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. The emissions warranty extension for this component applies to your vehicle and is transferable to any subsequent purchaser of your car."

does the extended HPFP warranty cover getting the car home when it goes into limp home mode 5 states away?

how about the second time it happens, those things go out more than once right?

driving a time bomb doesn't sound fun to me.

This is the exact reason I bought a 06 330i. Pulls hard, and no turbo to worry about. I'll wait a few more years for them to get it right.

+1

I really like the feel of the the 06 330xi. Plenty of power for me. Probably a good thing I never drove the 335.

Probably should change my signature. I've been driving the BMW more than my wife. She really likes the 4Runner.

There may be, but that's a DIY I would shy away from. Dropping the fuel tank to get at the pump sounds scary.

The HPFP is not in the fuel tank, IIRC, it's in the engine bay, under the intake manifold. There is a low pressure pump in the tank, but those aren't problematic.

Besides, most cars nowadays have a "hatch" under the rear seat which allows access to the fuel pump inside the gas tank. Never did check the E9x though, lol.

I stand corrected regarding the HPFP's location. Thanks Mike.
