Brake Pad Performance on the Track

I would like to start this thread to discuss members\' experiences with the stock brakes on the 1M during track and autox events.

Please mention whether any fade was present and what replacement track pads you may consider/recommend.

During my last track day, running 25 minute sessions in 98F heat, the stock brakes demonstrated some fade towards the end of each session. Would simply replacing the pads to a higher performance variety be a sensible and cost-effective solution? If so, which would you recommend?

First track day (stock pads/fluids), high speed sweeper into brake zone and had serious fade (15mins into session).
Currently have pfc01 front pads and castrol srf fluid, no fade at all.

Trackday Nürburgring northern loop. No fading (I run race brake fluid from day one), but buildup on the stock dics and pads that got so bad, that I called it a day after approx. 8 laps. The vibrations were so bad, you can actually see the entire car vibrating on the onboard vids. The discs had to be replaced.

I'll keep the stock setup during the winter (dd), but will change to Endless MX72 pads next spring.

sounds familiar
I will have my discs replaced this Monday and will get the performance pads of BMW installed. Interestingly enough the discs who have to be mounted when changing to this pads have different numbers
I only needed to pay the difference between stock and this set-up as the brakes where replaced under warranty. The advantage of the BMW sport pads (and discs) is that I keep my full warranty.
I drove this combo on the M3 on a trackday in Mugello and on 2 trackdays on the Ring and it performed excellent. As the 1M is even lighter I think (and hope) this will do the trick.

The Enless MA45B is excellent. I had it on my 335.

Track without fluid upgrade = dangerous. It is fast, cheap, simple. Put some ate super blue in and you will not fade.

As for pads. If your 1st track day ever stock are fine and you will use up about 20-50% of the pad depending on the track. But if this is not your first track day then upgrade 1st. I went to Carolina motorsports park with stock pads and ATE super blue (6th track day for me) and no fade but completely wore out the pads and brake dust was immense.

But seriously I have seen people destroy their new cars because they ran on stock fluid. Don't do it.

Granted it was another 100 degree day...i was learning the car and slowly pushing my braking point further...and it faded, almost went off track.
If you plan to do the cdv mod, do a brake fluid flush the same time.

I change pads for the track (13 days so far this year). Have run both PFC-01and PFC-06 pads. Also flushed brake fluid and installed stainless steel brake lines.

I went to a track with my stock pads, and it was bad, pedal feel was not the best, no fade but no proper stopping power. Changed to a set of XP8, stoping power was much better, but still some vibrations after a day at SPA. I`ll have to look into BMW performance pads + discs, maybe I can use the waranty aswell

don't forget that if you change to "race" fluid you have to change it on a regular base!

What did you think of the 01s compared to the 06s? I've always run the 01s in sprint races 30-60 min long and 06s on the endurance car. Have never run them on the same car to compare though. The 01s were awesome using AP brakes. The 06s on stock rotors have been pretty amazing too though. We ran an 18hr race recently (in a 318is) and still had almost 50% left on the 06 pads. Its a lightweight car and not a lot of power but we brake LATE. Its the only way you can pass people when you have no power. I've been in awe at how much I can absolutely abuse the 06 pads and they keep on delivering

01s have a bit more initial bite, but I get almost twice as much life out of the 06 pads and, for that reason, prefer them for HPDEs/open track events.

Only place that currently has them (and boxes were marked "prototype") is raceshopper.com

I'm encouraging James Clay (Bimmerworld) to start stocking them.

I went through 2 sets of front track pads for this car in 7 days. PFC 01 and DTC 70's in the front and DTC 70's in the rear which still have plenty of meat. Both performed well at Watkins Glen and NJMP lightning and this was all on OEM Brake fluid. Only now do i need to bleed. No advanced driver should be going to the track with out a set of track pads.

Sounds about right. I'd been getting maybe 3 days out of my front PFC-01 pads before they were getting down to the depth of the backing plate.

Simple question, how long do the disks last with those pads, i just had a long chat with a tuner around here specialized in bimmers, and he told me that if you want to get some real results and improvements with your car, the entire brake system has to be replaced. 6 calipers at the front, 4 at the back, new disks and good brakepads. Here in belgium for the enthousiasts that want to have a little more with their cars they suggest the fedoro 2500. I'll get an offer for the brake/tire/rims/suspension upgrate. Here in Spa, you can gain 40% of brake distance. make those porsches gt3 rs 4.0 cry...

Change your rotors when the stress cracks are wide enough to get your finger nail into the groove. They will show micro cracks well before they open up. I use Alcon 4 piston BBK's on the race car with BMW Euro M rotors and change them every 12-14 months but that's a 2700 lb car that is doing 30 min sprint races and 60-90 minute enduros. Just watch for the black cracks and have another set with you at the track.

It's not that hard to make Porsches cry in Spa when you brake. It all depends on the Porsche drivers.

On Nov. 6th...

He got next to me when braking for La Source, but couldn't pass me under braking. He passed me after La Source. My car is a stock 325 (e36) with a completely stock brake system (with the exception of Hawk brake pads and racing brake fluid). I wouldn't run the Hawks on a car that isn't "track only". They can kill a set of disks in approx six hours of Nordschleife (at race speed) and the brake dust can cause superficial rust.

Imho the stock brake system on the 1M (just as on the M3) is good. It's just the pads that are a problem, nothing else. I will be going for the Endless pads as everybody I know, that has used them so far states, that they are great stoppers, but do very little damage the discs.
