Spare Tire for 1M

Does anyone know if the BAVAUTO spare would work on the 1M?

That would be nice. Anyone know if it would clear the 1M brakes? Will it screw up the Full-lock differential if OD is different? 135 has an open diff with electronic slip control via ABS not mechanical like M3.

Just curious because I also would love a spare tire. I want to take road trips with my 1M.

I guess it says M3 spare, I didn't notice that at first. Anyone know about the diff?

That's a very good point. I hadn't thought of that.

You need an 18 inch wheel dia to clear the 1M from brakes. The Bav donut is a 17 inch wheel I believe.

It seems to fit on an M3.

Reading the linked post carefully, it was not the one from Bavarian in the pic.
It was an OEM rim. BMW parts No. 36-11-6-768-861

Since the outer diameter is slightly different, rear diff might lock. I would not fit a temp tire on the driving tire (rear).
You should call the road side assistance.

^^the only problem I see with using the above steel wheel is that you have to NOT loose that plastic adpator PLUS you need different wheel bolts bc of the steel wheel. The bolt heads taper in a different fashion. The above steel wheel is from a X5. I am still kind of surpised this wheel clears the larger 1M/M3 brakes.

Looking RealOEM.com I see there IS an alloy wheel spare tire: 36110445045 It is the same one I bought for my car last year! The main reason why I went with the alloy wheel was bc you don't need any adptor rings or different wheel bolts. BMW will not sell you the tire for this wheel... but they will sell you the alloy wheel.

I like the spare rims!!!

But for most of us, why not a set of ContiComfortKit? Anything more then this, it is emergency road assistance.

Most of you don't care about getting a flat or not having a dipstick because you can just call roadside assistance. I on the other hand, when I am not fighting windmills, want an M car to drive it and I want to take road trips. I want to explore this beautiful country in my M car like the in the old days. The cars nowadays are pretty reliable but tires are not. Especially when you are travelling cross country, South Dakota for example and if you hit something there is NO roadside assistance and there is no one for a few hundred miles that will stock that tire or rim. Furthermore, if you come out in the morning and your tire is flat and you fill it up with the sealer to drive to the repair shop. What if it leaks still. Are you going to get stuck on the freeway, damage your ZCP rim? If you call roadside assistance what are they going to do? Tow the vehicle is all they can do. Half you day is gone.

So we have beaten this to death and there are two camps, the vast majority that don't see a problem with it and a few of us that do.

So with that said, I LOVE THIS SPARE SETUP. If we can confirm that it will work safely with 1M, I want it. I won't lug it around town probably, but when I go on a road trip, this will bring me so much peace of mind.

Thank you Dackel

^^+1.

I just realized something...

The steel wheel that KIYO showed us(above post) is an 18inch wheel! Not a 17 inch wheel like I thought. I don't understand why in RealOEM.com - why they list my 17 inch alloy wheel then. ???

Has anyone bought a 18 inch steel wheel(in KIYO's post #5) to test fit it to a 1M ?

I'm pretty sure my 17 inch spare wheel would not clear the 1M's larger front brakes.

So just to be sure before I buy one - Does the 17" alloy spacesaver definitely fit over the front and rear brakes of the 1M? [The real OEM site mentions that it is just for dealer service use and not for public use for some reason].

Oops!!! Sorry, I forgot I was posting in the 1M forum. No, it will not fit(at least I do not think it will clear the front brakes). ? I think you will need an 18 inch wheel (min) to clear the 1M's front brakes.

But when I look up a euro M3 I see they list my alloy 17" spare wheel. ? Maybe they want you to rotate one of the rear wheels forward when you have a front flat on a M3 ???

I think a better solution is to order a X5 or e60 spare tire that is an 18" but a steel wheel. I would ask Dan@United for which spare wheel he recommends.

This is the e60 kit I was thinking about. But I do not see the wheel size listed. ?

Real OEM list the 17" for the 1M also:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...61&hg=36&fg=95

Why do BMW recommend the 17" if it doesn't fit (there already being an 18" spacesaver in production)?

It would be really nice if someone has a 1M and the 17" alloy to find out for sure if it fits front and rear.

I'm not sure the rear wheels would actually fit on the front without rubbing issues in an emergency (if the alloy 17" was fitted to the rear, and the rear wheel temporarily fitted to the front)

BTW,

The E60 wheel set you mention is 17" to the following specification:

Emergency space saver wheel with tyre set comprises:

1x Black steel emergency wheel 4BX17 ET:18 (36 11 6 758 778)

1x Rubber valve L=42,5MM (36 12 1 116 326)

1x Tyre Continental CST17 T135/80R17 102M (36 12 6 758 795)

1x Wing nut M8 (71 10 6 781 144)

1x Oddments tray (71 11 6 758 781)

1x Crank (71 12 1 179 953)

1x Chock, aluminium (71 12 6 756 392)

1x Articulated car jack, steel (71 12 6 767 944)

1x Bracket for spare wheel (71 15 1 180 625)

Question!????

Would it work to get the same diameter wheel as the front and the equivalent tire and just minimize the width of the tire and use that as an emergency spare. I know it would be way heavier than the donut that we would all love to have and doesn't seem to exist except in our imaginations.

If the equivalent diameter is the same and the wheel is the same size so that it clears the brakes, but the tire was thinner to cut back on weight...... would that work on both the front and that back?

I wouldn't want to jack up the car, but I also can't imagine crossing rural Nebraska without a spare of some sort.....

HELP!

Buckeyegirl- Have you tried this site? It looks like they have the donut spare in stock. A little pricey.

I would also suggest to contact Gill at www.TireRack.com for a space saver donut spare. I am sure he must have run across this issue before. You can also PM him here on 1addicts.

The Spare Tire Saga continues

Some additional info on this subject: I contacted Tirerack (Gill) yesterday re: the space saver spare. They have nothing. I also emailed and phoned Bimmerzone (thanks Tom303 for the link to the M3 site!) and talked to Vincent who was very helpful. BZ has an 18" space saver wheel/tire that fits late model M3s so he figures it should work for the 1M. There is a nifty video clip on the site showing the SS spare being installed on the front of an M3 sedan. It works well there. Vincent says that it will work as a temporary spare on the rear as well. BZ also has a very compact screw jack (featured in the video) that extends into the plastic jacking site of the M3. These items are not inexpensive but considering the peace-of-mind they would provide...well? Ideally, Vincent would like to hear from any 1M owner that gets the SS spare to make sure that it truly fits on our 1Ms (take pictures).

I’m a new participant on this site but I have been following all of the chatter since we decided to commit to a 1M purchase this past August (car should be at the dealer within the next 2 weeks).

The spare tire string of discussion is very practical and is of considerable concern to me (I did go into the 1M purchase knowing the pros and cons including the no spare and lack of run-flats).

Every vehicle that we have ever had has contained a spare of some sort and a jack etc. Our last BMW (’99 E36 M3) had these and 4 very accessible jacking sites on the rocker panels. The jack was a very light and very effective tool.

Long road trips, in a fast and awesome handling car, are what we live for and the 1M should fill this need admirably. We try to stay away from the freeways and take the secondary roads that are scenic and supremely fun to drive. In the past our BMW road trips have been throughout BC and the western US. The thought of a flat or ruined tire on some byway in rural BC or outback Montana, without an emergency spare tire solution, conjures up all sorts of difficulties (despite BMW Assist/AAA and the inflator/goo “mobility” kit). I wouldn’t carry an emergency spare (and associated equipment) in everyday driving but for long road trips it would provide considerably more mental comfort in a car with perhaps more fragile tires than we are used to.

I certainly appreciate all of the information that I have gleaned from this site (invaluable!!). Thanks to all!
