New owner of 2008 335i - review and some questions

Hello everyone,

I am the proud new (to me) owner of a 2008 BMW 335i sport/premium package with 6MT.

I have owned 2 E36’s in the past and my previous vehicle was a 2000 BMW 540i sport 6MT. I loved this car and was very hesitant to make the transition from a 5 series to a 3 series but I took the dive.

My first impressions of the 335i sedan:
When I sat in the car, I was amazed at how much room it has. I can fit four 6 feet tall guys in my car just as comfortably as I could in the 5 series. Another pleasant surprise was the folding down rear seats. Because of this, I can get in more luggage then my 5 series though it did not have the rear folding down seats. Oh, and the icing on the cake: Cup holders that are not cheap and flimsy!

The driving experience is where the car really shines. There is power in every gear and it handles like a dream. I love driving this machine! The only thing I hate is the rear taillights! Ahh, so ugly.

Now to a few quick questions to you seasoned e90 owners:

1) When I unlock my car from the remote I have to be in about 20 feet from my car otherwise it wont work. Any reason why?
2) Is there a way to make the sideview mirrors fold in once you shut the car off or lock the doors?
3) When I hold the unlock button my windows roll down. When I hold the lock button nothing happens. Is there a way to program the key to make the windows roll up if I hold the lock button?
4) When not driving with a heavy foot, what type of gas mileage are you guys getting?

This really is an amazing vehicle. I just hope that this car does not kill me on maintenance. I plan to keep this vehicle around for a long time. I promised myself I would not mod it – Maybe I’ll just chip it …

Buy the LCI (facelift) taillights. They look a lot better.

1. Do you mean that the remote has too short of a range for you?

2. Press the fold button. I also think this is possible to achieve with the smart key unit sold by EAS (European Auto Source).

3. Definitely possible with the EAS smart key unit.

4. I get 29 on the highway and 18 around town daily.

Thanks for the reply Brey!

I am glad to know that I can get the LCI lights on my car! Will be the first upgrade I do.

1. yes, I mean the remote has a very short range.

2. I should have phrased my question a little more clearer. How can I make the side view mirrors fold with my smart key?

3. Can you tell me how or link me to a thread that does? I did a quick search and did not find anything.

For the short range issue ... if you touch your chin with the remote this will increase the range. Give it a try ! The trick is your body acts as antenna.

The remoteKEY+ is what Brey has been referring to. Here is a thread with some information about it:

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll gladly answer them.

Oh, I see. I was hoping there would be a way to do it from my current key.

I'm in Toronto, Canada. Have you shipped here?

Congrats & welcome.

Things I recommend doing with the car:
-CDV (Clutch Delay Valve) mod - gets rid of the damn CDV and improves shifting smoothness, especially off the line and reversing.
-Replace the gooseneck stock shift knob with the M sport one or ZCP weighted.

Beyond that the car is pretty well equipped + ready to go!

You can certainly chip it, a JB3 or JB4 would add a lot of HP for a few hundred dollars. Just take it out before warranty service.

Thanks for the warm welcome CJ421

How much HP would the JB4 add if that was the only mod I did?

JB4 will give you 60-80 horsepower extra to the wheels:

Be sure to TAKE IT OUT before you go for service (if you have warranty).

OP - a chip is by far the biggest bang for buck.

Don't do it. First mod should be Quaife or Wavetrac LSD. Then add power.

Search and read threads here....you'll see.

Wow 60-80HP to the WHEELS?!! I heard that it can add that much from a friend but did not believe it.

I did a search on Quaife and Wavetrac LSD. That is expensive stuff! Any reason why you feel that I should do this before chipping it?

Keep in mind I just bought the car and do not want to go crazy spending all my money on mods. The car is a daily driver (and I drive a lot!). I think the chip alone would be a nice addition though without voiding my warranty.

The remoteKEY+ allows you to use your key for these added features. Yes, shipping to Canada would not be a problem at all

You'll like this mod....search for LSD install and read all about it! ~$1800 for Wavetrac, out the door.
