Fuel Economy
Drove to Lichfield on Saturday to visit some family, with rising fuel prices I decided to see how economically I could drive
On the 140 mile journey I managed to achieve 50.4mpg, and a combined range of 789 miles, this was over mainly motorway, A-Roads and a little bit of town driving. Out of interest what sort of figures do you get when you drive "economically" Unfortunately on the return journey I was unable to obtain the same figures Here are the photos for proof: Ignore the average speed, I didn't reset it before the start of the journey

Not too bad. If I really try in the 335i I get high 30's LOL Really really taking it easy I have seen just over 40mpg. JB4 about to release an economy map which I'm looking forward to trying!
50mpg from a 3l D is quite good. I could get that in my 525d Estate though so I would expect you could squeeze a little more in a 3 series saloon. Seen a drop in MPG since fitting 275 tyres though |

Trip to London from Birmingham before hitting the London traffic. Everything was reset before start of trip.
Excuse the white snow, which comes out of the AC although on this trip AC was off. No cruise control speed between 56 to 70 mph. Slowed going up hills and gained speed down hills. Motorway had morning traffic but was moving. |

I never pay much attention to my fuel computer. I put £20 per week in the tank and get 100 miles. It's worth 20p per mile for the performance from the 335

This was a while ago now - but I'd filled up and reset the trip, and 100 miles later the range was 604 miles - in other words 704 miles total range from a tank.
This was mainly cruising down the M1.

I didn't realise how efficient the 320d was, to get 70+ mpg is impressive, I reckon I could squeeze a few more miles out of the tank if there was no town driving involved

yeah it is very impressive. I was using the slipstream behind trucks and cars to reduce drag. But I couldn`t believe it how after over 100 miles the average was over 70mpg.

Not too sure what it works out in MPG but my 320d manages 5.5ltrs per 100km 80% autobahn 20% city at an average altitude 0f 700Mtrs

Went out today on a 45 mile round trip and managed to squeeze 56.5 mpg out of it. I think I would really struggle to get any higher than that

I must admit I don't usually drive economically however I've been doing a lot more miles over the past few months and need to save some money on diesel

I can get low 40's from my 330 if driving like a saint on a mostly motorway/dual carriageway run, or A/B roads where you can keep the speed fairly constant. One example below (this was about 90 miles starting with B-roads then mostly motorway).
Impressed that a 335d could do 50 - when I had a 318d loan car I struggled to get it into the early 50's, it felt totally gutless and any throttle use at all saw it in the 40's. It was very young, though... |

Has anyone else noticed how little difference a few mpg actually makes? My average tankful at 35mpg gets me around 450 miles. When I did a load of town driving on my last tankful, the economy was threatening to drop below 30mpg but I still got 400 miles from it.
In terms of money, those 50 miles lost cost me about a gallon and a half, or 6 litres @ 137p, less than £10. I would be bothered if that was every tankful, but as a once off, its no big deal.

Iv just recently got back from driving to Northern Italy and back. All in about 2500 miles.
Car averaged 54.3mpg. Majority of that was on motorways between 75 & 80 mph with the boot fully loaded. |
