Any Coin Experts-collectors On Here ??
Hi,
A friends daughter needs to raise funds to go to Africa, to help build schools, teach children etc. She has a 10p coin which “appears” to be unique/rare, well having spent quite some time on Google/Google Images, have failed to come up with another. A bit wary of going to a coin shop, in case of “it’s not worth much, but I’ll give you a fiver for it” scenario ! So far have established it is a “First Issue Large 10p”, (diameter = 28.5mm) which means minted between 1968-81, all images found so far confirm the “tails” side, however the “heads” side differs from all images found so far. 1. Queen has a “Laurel Wreath” on her head, NOT a crown. 2. There is NO DATE on it. 3. Also appears to have been “hit too hard” in the stamping process, the rim is offset to the “tails” side. Please see attached photos. Any tips, suggestions, leads, would be very much appreciated. THANKS. Michael. |

All I can tell you is the front is a two-shilling and the back is, as you can see, 10 new pence. Never come across that before. Looks like the obverse is overstamped.
Looks like two coins pressed together - is it?

I collect as many coins ad possible. I get paid coins and collect them
in the bank to pay my bills etc! I also like to collect coins for paying for fun stuff too!

Thanks for the rapid reply, that explains why there is no date, two shilling having it on "tails side", and ten new pence having it on the "heads" side. $64 million dollar question, is it worth anything ?? I understand they were minting pre-decimal coins alongside the new decimal coins, 1968-72 period so it could be possible to stamp one side decimal and one £sd. Michael. |

I suspect that if the coin had been genuinely minted with a pre-decimal die on the front and a decimal die on the back it could very well be worth something. It does look on the pictures to have been almost "tampered" with (no offence ) Certainly worth asking a dealer - I'm no expert at all. Google doesn't seem to return much - it's very interesting.

http://www.gcoins.net/en/catalog/77/3 Ive been looking at my mums coin collection, hundreds of them, and have found info on all of them on the net. Odd that there is nothing describing your one. And odd there is no date. Could it be a fake made at that time period ? No idea I was thinking maybe a proof coin, but then it would be shiny and known / recorded somewhere on the net I would seek an appraiser to get some advise |

Ian,
You are good !!! Just got the magnifying glass out, looks like it's a two shilling coin, with the centre turned out (lathe) with a new ten pence with the rim turned off pressed inside the two shilling !!! (Can just see the rim serrations on the outside of the 10p where they did not quite turn it all off, and did not get the thickness correct, hence the dish effect) !! Mystery solved, guess this won't be funding the Africa trip then !!!!!!!! |

Aha. I've seen people do that to make a double-headed coin (invisible to the naked eye) and was sometimes used as an exercise in metal-turning workshops.
Interesting but as you say, it looks like the funding will need to come from elsewhere

I used to work with a bloke, who turned the centres out of coins, then work the hoop into a ring, with the wording on the inside. Took him ages.
