E90 Turbo 'Siren' Whine
Hi
I apologise, as this appears to be a relatively well-covered topic. However, I'm looking for a bit more than 'replace the turbo' is possible. Does anyone actually know the real cause, and is if feasible to fix it yourself? I'm failry savvy when it comes to cars and have never made any glaring blunders as far as I know. I am wondering how easy it is to change yourself. I've heard dealers charge up to 1500 with independents charging £300-700. If I can do it myself in less than maybe 6 hours I'd rather do that, and buy a recon as the car is going back shortly. I don't seem to get smoke, but performance drops at the top end (giving erroneous RPM and gear changes as it's auto). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers |

STOP DRIVING IT.
If the turbo completely gives up, you're likely to need a new engine (actuator flaps or even the actual blades getting sucked into the engine) "jinjur" on this forum did a replacement turbo DIY, so I'd recommend you speak to him re: how to go about things

The whine is caused by deformed/chipped/bent blade tips. They can easily disintegrate. No biggie to fit a recon, but are you equipped to deal with seized manifold bolts etc?
