The majority of 4 cylinder engines have balancer shafts these days in the pursuit of greater refinement.
A inline 4 cylinder is a hideously unbalanced mess naturally and needs all the help it can get.!!! |

I thought it was still not that common. The N20 engine appears to only have one and that looks a bit lightweight. The two Lanchester shafts in my 944 engine are huge chunks of metal.

Other than the new N20 no existing BMW petrol engines do. I believe it is still uncommon - they were intoduced in the 80s (by Mitsubishi I think) although invented years before, but not many used them with the noticeable exception of Porsche who produced the world's largest four-pot in the 3.0 944S2

Yes, the N20 isn't in production yet.

Should work now, although it would look as though BMW's numbering system is even more weird. Z4 X28i is a 4 pot 2.0ltr

They're keeping the same names but they'll all be four-pots with six-pot-like outputs.

i'm pretty sure balancer shafts were first introduced on the 4 cyl engines with the launch of the e46 1.9l way back in '98, wether or not they still use them.. i've no idea
the engine mounts are probably much more advanced now, so they maybe aren't really required apart from in the diesels?? Last edited by duke knooby; 05-21-2011 at 06:02 PM.. |

I can't find any either. Look at the exploded view of (say) the N42 engine from the e46 - not a balance shaft in sight.
