Better mpg in m3 than my 335i?

A chap that lives on my street who I know quite well just picked up his 2010 e92 M3 dct last week, I had a day off work today so he had planned to take me out for a spin to show me why I need to upgrade.

First of all I'd like to say what a machine and I had not previous to driving one realised how much fun it is higher up in the rev range. The experience of gunning it in 2nd is something that shall be remembered for a long time.

Anyway since I was driving I made it a point to reset the mpg as we set off, did mostly the same sort of route I do in my 335i for a fair comparasion.

To my suprise after a 35 mile journey of mostly city centre traffic jams and a couple of 2nd gear slip road hits the average showed 20 mpg.

Now my 335i auto only gets around 17-18pg on similar type driving/roads.

Am I right in assuming the dct box helps economy a bit compared to my 6 speed step?

Anyway I'm sure there is something wrong with my 335i, it's pretty silly that an m3 can get better economy than one.

The rate this is going I would be much better of buying an m3 given that it won't really cost me much more to run. weird.

Are the UK and US MPG's same? I beat the shit out of my 335 and still averaging around 20-21. I say take it to a dealer, the car isn't running right.

Wow really in a 335d thats amazing lol was that mainly stop start traffic?

I just get the impression from everyone else's figures here that getting 17 in a 335i is pretty bad, most are much higher even looking at fuelly.

Is it possible that a 335i is not as efficient at pulling away during stop start traffic as say an n/a m3? Maybe due to constant on boost.

I averaged around 21 in the 335i, maybe 26 on the m'way.

The M3 is doing just under 17 so far.

Doesn't sound like much but i used to be able to get at least 250 miles of of a tank on the 335i usually. Looks like i'll get about 190 from the current tank in the M3.

Having more fun now though

No they are not.

A US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon.

So you will see lower miles-per-gallon numbers than we do

And I'm with you OBM - I like the rpms to listen to the Bastuck, and I dont hold back.
Check my MPG below.

I reckon I'm well versed in the range of what a 335i auto can do having done 40k miles in mine since Oct 09. never less than 97 octane, usually 99.

Worst tank about 180 miles, wife did the school run urban crawl for a week in winter, sat waiting for the kids with the engine on for the heated seats. About 15-16mpg.

Average over last 2500 miles now at 28.8, based on 70% motorway, 30% urban, with the odd blast. About 350-360 miles a tank.

WTF is the fuelly???......If it's the same thing as m1bjr grid thingy....then I'm the same as m1jbr.....over the last 7k miles since I had the car I,ve averaged 26.4 mpg....all sorts of driving at all sorts of speeds

How does everyone with an m3 average 17-20mpg - I get 14...15mpg at best!! Only ever fill up high octane too.

My M3 is nowhere near as good on fuel as my 335i was. Also the M3 MPG meter is exagerated by about 3 MPG over what you actually get. My 335 on the other hand was very close.

+1

The 335 seemed fairly accurate. The M is telling me it's done 17.4 on this tank though & I reckon it's doing about 14.7

Has anyone else compared what their car is actually doing vs what it thinks it's doing?

Between 300 - 400 miles on a tank full. Usually manage 350 miles which is OK for me.
