Quiz: slowest depriciator - new BMW > 1 yr old

What do you reckon the answer is, based on a new car inc options to trade value after 1 year.

This is based on %, not actual value, so stuff like X5 40d might be in with a shout. Can anything beat 20%?

Opinions and any evidence sought.

5 Series GT perhaps, must be a few high % contenders?

Dont you think its a bit of skewed question?? Some cars will need a better spec than cars lower in the range, dont you think.

Just now i'd say the 520d must be one of the top cars they sell for value retention.

Should make interesting thread.

A friend bought a new 5GT ( cancelled order) for £10k less than list at an 'Event' our local Coopers dealership was holding so I would imagine they are struggling to shift them and residuals wouldn't be great....

Yeah, those 5 GTs have dropped like a stone; so much so I considered one for the wife. Virtually every 'event' has about 5 of the buggers to shift.

Do Minis count in the contest???

It's a tricky one - demand is high for popular models like the 320d but then there are loads to choose from.
High end models tend to drop a lot.
Needs to be diesel IMO.

It'd have to be recently released to have that wow factor - so maybe an F10 5 series. Quite possibly a 535d Touring that hasn't had a bonkers spec added?

I would have thought something like a 118d M Sport (3/5 door and coupe)with modest spec. V low VED and running costs make them very attractive. Get a 10% discount intially and I suspect one year depreciation could well be 10-15% which is good.

Away from BMW, a was impressed with the strong residual value of my previous Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0 TDI.

This issue is really one of the holy grails of motoring. I have often wondered if it is possible to run a new car (a decent one like a BMW) for 'free' or at least cost neutral overall, by buying at a huge discount and changing every 6-12 months and getting your money back at sale time. If it was possible, I would certainly do it, being fed up and shocked by the amount of money I have lost in depreciation.

Thanks for replies - yes it can include mini.

I can maybe get a 15% on new, so you have hit nail on head Peter.

A mini CS or SD is probably a good bet. Some real examples would be good. I need to do some more research.

I really want the answer to be 'loaded F30 340d m sport touring'.....

If you can get a discount, so so can the next customer you would have thought, unless they're one of those people who buy at list price!

It's supply and demand as usual, so you need low supply & high demand. I think the R8 was being sold for something like 10k over list when it first came out to "must have the latest thing" londoners, so you could have probably bought one of those, run it for a couple of months & sold for a profit!

My prev car to the 335i was a 25th Anniversary Golf GTI (mk4 TDI)

I sold that in an auction after 5 years for just over 50% of purchase price

F30 340d Touring would be brilliant - if it comes out, I'm getting one!

I have attempted to play the depreciation game and decided it's near enough pot luck.

Had a few cars reported to be extremely depreciation proof and pretty desirable (e.g. mk4 R32 Golf soon after they were released - bought at 6 months old) that have lost a fortune and then had cars that are meant to drop like a stone that haven't been bad at all (Suzuki Jimny lost virtually nothing in over two years, Astra -bought new - wasn't too bad either).

Just get the car you want, enjoy it and accept a hit when you come to sell it - obviously some cars lose hideous money - big petrol SUVs, luxobarges and more but most people that buy them can afford the hit anyway if they are able to buy them new.

AE article from 10/2009

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carrevi...n_busters.html

BMW X6 - xDrive 30d auto - 55.9%
BMW 1-Series Coupé - 118d Coupé - 53.3%

Where the best BMWs (value after 3yr/30k) Things might have changes since though.

Latest thought. New 1 M coupe. Only 450 for UK. About £45k list with toys. Still worth 38-40k trade after 6-9 months?

Edit: with due credit to chrisbin!

James is this thread on the basis of a big discount with a UK main dealer?

450 is not many so that will defiantly help, and the reviews that are coming out are favourable as well.

I would have thought those figures would be achievable.
