USB/iPod Tips

Thought I'd start a thread for people like myself, who've just started using the USB connection for audio. I'll start the ball rolling, with a gotcha that had me worried for an hour or so:

I connected my iPod via the Y Cable and USB/Aux connectors. (I don't have iDrive by the way.) What awful, horrible, distorted sound quality! A shame, because it's so handy to be able to navigate iPod menus via the radio's display. Easier than using that f*cing dreadful 'click wheel' etc. I spent a while swapping the Y cable back and forth with my old standard AUX cable, and always found the latter gave superior sound.

Then I found the problem: the 'Aux Level' setting on the hi-fi was by default set quite high, around 5 or 6. Turned it down to 3 and hey presto, the distortion was gone.

In retrospect, maybe it should have been obvious, but.........

Any more USB audio tips???

When you turn off the ignition, my ipod doesn't switch off. Therefore when i use the car 2 days later, the battery is always dead, and it has forgotten which playlist it was on. Can the car send a powerdown signal to the ipod when you switch off the ignition ? Is this an idrive setting ?
Thanks.

not sure - but in my last car i had the glovebox i-pod lead fitted - which totally took control over the i-pod and switched it on and off - charged it and basically used it as a remote CD Changer - and all functions were accessed via the head unit..............

Someone mentioned a little device that was £10.50 on Amazon that charges your ipod and can be put in the armrest - was on here 3 or 4 days ago.........

Get a kensington liquidAUX if you don't have 6FL.

Where/how is the sound of a superior quality compared to a normal aux input? Although the connection is at the bottom of the iPod/iPhone in the kensington, it's still entering via aux?
