E90 335i - Auto - 2nd Gear Launch - How to?
This is my first Auto, and having difficulty with launching it.
Only mod is a JB4 tune. From what I read, 2nd gear launch (sport mode, change to 2M) is supposed to yield a bit of wheel spin. When doing this, I brake stand and bring revs to ~2k, and simultaneously release brake and smash gas. Yes, there is a little jump, but no wheel spin. One thing I noticed when doing this: As the RPMs grew, it seemed like the engine was bogging. The RPM increase wasn't smooth-- when I would like 1400 RPM, it would drop a little, so I would need to press gas harder. Same thing at 1600 and 1800 RPM. Perhaps the brakes are slipping, thus relieving some engine pressure? Any ideas? How deep into the accelerator am I supposed to be when holding down the brakes? Am I supposed to be releasing brake and mashing gas at the same time? Thanks! |

Floor it first, release the brakes as you feel the car start to break free.

To get full power of the Engine you need to hold the DTC button like five seconds longer After you press it for the first time then the cluster will show you a new icon... Now you got the POWER!!!

you need more power to get a nice 2nd gear launch.
2nd gear is a larger gear, so 1st gear might be better for you and let it automatically shift to second. the engine must spin the gear and will not get full power until the higer rpms, so the bogging is really the engine trying to gain power with the larger 2nd gear. |

Traction control is off completely. 1st is useless as too much spin, so I thought a 2nd gear launch was widely regarded as the proper way to launch these things..?

2nd gear is the right way!
I build the car up to 2500rpm in 2nd gear. You really have to hold the brake down hard. the 500rpm makes a big difference. Make sure as soon as you release the brake you put your foot flat but don't push down hard enough to active kick down mode It's not that good for the car so i seldom do it but torque braking does give you the best launch.
