Inpa/SSS/GT1...help with the acronyms

Hi

There seems to be tonnes of different stuff used to interface with/program BMWs. Can somebody please help me with some info and fill in the gaps:

As far as I can make out, Inpa is used to test various parts of the car/reset service lights. NCS Expert is used to program the car. Now what is Progman, SSS, GT1, etc? Are these all BMW official programs? What else is out there?

I bought the K + DCAN (inpa compatible) usb interface from one-stop electronics. Which programs can I use to interface with it - I have gathered that I can use inpa and NCSExpert...

Also, where can I get car data with part numbers, etc like in the Mercedes Benz Star Diagnosis system?

If I want to reprogram valve timing and the like, where do I get the data from?
