Its the inevitability of progress I guess. Its kinda sad how fat the 5 series has gotten since the E39. I agree, the e90 is about as big as it should get.

i welcome the new bigger 3 series as i thought the rear seat legroom was a bit small (i am 6'4"). The new five series is way too big and the new 7 series might as well be a limo.

Well, what is interesting is that all cars sold in the U.S. will have to achieve much improved gas mileage in the coming years - during the F30 model cycle, so you would think that everyone would be trying to at least get weight out of their cars. Continually making them bigger does not help this situation, even when efforts may be made to lighten various components and put in smaller engines. From what I have read, the new F30 will be only a few inches shorter than the E39 5-series last produced in '03.

Current e9x is probably the size of the old 5-series models.

Its a tough call, definitely. I am a small-car guy--love the go-carts of the world, and have owned and loved many fine little cars (Integras, Mazdas, and my current e90 328). I agree that the current dimensions of the 3 should stay as close to the same as possible. I think there has got to be a way for BMW (a top-notch engineering firm) to add some needed back-seat room to the F30 without compromising its "small car" status. So, I want both bigger but smaller

I am disappointed. But, I guess that's where the 1 Series fills the slot. The general public demands larger family sedans. Look how ridiculously large the Camry and Accord are now.

The new 5-series is basically a 7-series. The new 3-series will be the old 5-series.
It's not so bad...

This is one of the reasons that I ordered a new E90 for ED delivery on May 11. To me, the current 3 series is the perfect size - not too big, but not too small for a daily driver. The prospect of the F30 getting bigger, along with the electric assist steering pushed me towards my decision.

If BMW puts electronic steering in the new 3 series I will be switching to Audi. I have owned BMWs exclusively since 1977 but this would be a deal breaker.

No, Im not really disappointed or depressed they are growing as I am too LOL. But seriously, its just how things go. This is why the 1 series was introduced. Its a step back to where 3 used to be, and it too will grow eventually and ppl will be bitching and remember how nice and small the 1 used to be, and at that point some new model will be introduced to fit the bill. Just get what size works for you and who cares what number is on the back.

When I started driving 5-series back in the 1970's, the E12 was smaller than the current 3-series. In fact the wheel base was almost 3" shorter and the track almost 4" narrower. Width across the car (inside) was about 2.5" less than our current 3-series. The F30 variants will be virtually E39 size, as the current car is only slightly smaller for many dimensions. For me weight is the big issue, we are really getting bloated these days for kerb weight. HighlandPete |

in reality the cars haven't really grown,; they've simply migrated through model designations. very soon you'll have a line-up of 5,3 and 1 series that are comparable in size to the 7,5 and 3 series of some years back; so the line-up is comparable. but you'll say: "there's still a 7 series". well since nobody buys it anymore because the 5 is so big it might as well not exist. btw, this model migration represents great value for the consumer since it has not been accompanied by resetting the prices. in other words you can have your e36/46 by buying an f20, etc.

The 3 Series, in fact all BMWs, seem to grow with each new generation. The only thing that does not seem to grow in a BMW is back seat foot room. Granted there is more that enough back seat foot room in the 750iL, but neither the 3 nor 5 has enough foot room for today's adults. I presume the growth in dimension and weight is caused by safety needs and additional features. And who really cares about the people in the back seat?
My 2011 E90 feels much bigger than my 2000 E46 but the back seat leg room seems to be about the same. Further, my E46 trunk is better able to accommodate golf clubs than my E90 - and my E46 has a full size spare tire while the E90 has run flat tires with no spare. Offsetting the size factors is the much more powerful engine in the MY 2011 335 than the 2000 328 - even though both were the most powerful non-M3 engines in the 3 Series in their era. Also the ability to plug an iPod into the CD/Radio in 2011 is much more convenient than having the single CD or 6 CD changer in the 2000. And being able to connect your phone by Bluetooth to the sound system in the 2011 works a lot better than the very expensive phone and cradle connection in the 2000. So, you win some and you lose some. All things considered it is hard to find a better value for your money than the BMW 3 Series. |
